its a matter of personal preference riff. in my opinion...i actually dont like bipoles/dipoles. tried em before, and well, you might as well have 7.1 direct radiating speakers instead of the bi/dipoles, since you are looking for a 'spatial' environment.

but as i mentioned, thats just my 2 cents.

To me, both Bi-pole and Di-pole are outmoded for home theater. The reason why they were introduced was because of Pro-Logic which was mono in the rears, low power so you wanted the sound to disperse further than what Pro-Logic was able to accomplish. With DD, DTS, HD Audio... you don't really want or need the sound to disperse all over the place. The whole point of these mediums is to give you specific sounds from specific points. By dispersing that, you don't get that pin-point accuracy. The sound is then spread out - which is what you wanted with Pro-Logic. Doing this in the rears is like treating your fronts loke a mono signal to me.

It's really just personal preferance and the accoustics of the room will play a huge part of course but over all, I wouldn't use Di' or Bi-poles at all. I like to hear that pinpoint accuracy but I suppose those two speaker technologies is like using an EQ in your system... it CAN make up for lost accoustics but personally, I'm not a fan. I want to hear things like I was in the mixing/editing booth, not like I was in a hollow boomy theater. Just my opinion.

for the record, i dont necessarily believe that bi/dipoles are a bad thing, its just i prefer direct radiating speakers instead.

bi/dipoles tho DO sound great WHEN you want a MUSICAL experience. they excel when you want to have the HT area to sound like a concert hall (again, if done correctly may i emphasize), giving you a more spatial feel instead of someone blasting right next to you.

as mentioned, they were developed a while back, using 5.1 material and 'dispersing' them into a larger atmosphere (hmm, a movie theater?), without considering adding more and more speakers to the mix. (well they do that to a certain degree, but they matrix whats there so to speak, thus the older brother dolby surround came about)...

again, i highly recommend trying it out if you'd like to, just to get that monkey off your back (it also helps instead of having your head saying 'didnt i tell you' or 'what if'...)

good luck.
