Looking at the footage, what seems to me is this - it has much less grain (or no grain at all). Dust, scratches etc, are 95% gone.
Well, seems they didn't scre* it up with the cleanup process, thank goodness for that. Ahem... on second thought. something seems off in this scene UPDATE: Just checked my US BD, to compare the scene, and ofc, that scene has flicker problems. But, what is fascinating about this is the fact, that the scene is one of the more problematic ones in restoring it, the way THEY wanted it - by removing the element of film grain. Here's what I mean, while the Unicorn and Schmendrick are having their conversation, the fog is literally moving in front of them, from right to left. Yes, you can actually SEE the layer of grain moving/flying within that fog layer. Which was, I bet, one hell of a nightmare for them to restore it... NOT. While comparing the two scenes, you don't see the fog moving or anything in the new restoration, it's still foggy, but no movement whatsoever. I can't understand one thing, if these guys really wanted to have a success with this, they should have avoided posting this troublesome scene on YT. CONCLUSION: Positive: Flicker problem solved, dust/scratch - 95% cleaned up, character drawing lines seem to be in order. Negative: Too much grain has been eliminated. And thus, you can have problems like the fog scene. Otherwise, unnoticeable in other scenes without layers of SFX (like fog etc.) ------------------------------- As for the special features, explain me this? Lionsgate SF: "The Tail of the Last Unicorn" Minidocumentary Shout Factory SF: "True Magic: The Story Of The Last Unicorn" featurette Is the featurette in the new edition, the same as the last one or what? That's a very good question. It also looks like they're dropping the Immortal Characters Featurette. I may just keep my 2011 Bluray after all.

I'm glad this movie is getting more attention too, but I'm still worried this new bluray won't compare to the 2011 one from Lionsgate. To me, that one is PERFECT! Also, I'm still waiting for the announcement of a live action movie adaptation now that the film rights from Continent Films have expired!

I found the most recent release to be satisfactory in respects to picture quality. If those clips are even partly representative of their "restoration" then I will not bother with purchasing it.
It appears to have significant DNR applied which will cause loss in fine fidelity details along with creating issues with ink lines. I am wagering that the actual BR release will result in fuzzy, ill defined, shifty ink lines due to the DNR. They have applied EE to compensate for the DNR; simply view the edges of the frame. YMMV and perhaps the final product will be decent but I am doubtful. Best regards, KvE |
