I haven't had a chance to see it yet, but I certainly saw a lot of people calling it such when it came out.

Yes it's definitely considered neo noir by most, and you can clearly see those elements in the trailer. Vlad you should look into neo noir a little more, as it's not simply just the same thing as classic film noir, which you seem to be getting stuck on

I've seen Inherent Vice and the only reason I could see anyone calling it a Noir is because it stars a detective. Other than that, it is just a hippie druggie sexual fantasy movie more than a detective story.

I'd say no to Road to Perdition, and Public Enemies as those are more crime/gangster films. The Killer Inside Me is apparently based off a noir novel from the 1950's, and some reviews have mentioned noir in them, so that's a maybe, though based off the plot, I'd lean towards no. I haven't seen the two De Palma films, but I think they might be more suspense/thriller in the vein of Hitchcock, with perhaps some noir elements included (which can be said about several Hitchcock's films too). I'd like others to chime in too

Body Double is (broadly) a sleazy update/amalgamation of Rear Window and Vertigo, debatable as a neo-noir (but not really..?), though to me it reads more as postmodern Hitchcock thriller to me. I've not seen Dressed to Kill; don't even know what it's about. De Palma certainly has the capacity to make a neo-noir, even though the one he has made, The Black Dahlia, is awful. I've read The Killer Inside Me, but haven't seen the movie. It could fit as a neo-noir, depending on how stylized it is or isn't, but I can't speak to it. |

It fits in this thread and has what are to me obvious comparisons (I'll stop short of saying 'rip-offs') to several other films listed here. I'm more taken aback that the back cover states "noir-to-end-all-noirs...Nothing like it" when I can name a handful of other films like it that are actually better and more original than it.

It would be hard for me to agree on any of those. I want to say Body Double could be hail mary'd in but it's been so long since I've seen it.
EDIT: Missed your second statement, which I loved and wholeheartedly support lol Last edited by kuro_sawa; 03-13-2015 at 06:40 PM. |

Got it already, and agreed.
![]() I have: Chinatown L.A. Confidential L.A. Noire Body Heat Basic Instinct Gemini Rue Blade Runner But I can't think of any others to add to this list at this time. I can think of lots of neo-noir, but can't think if their sountracks would be along the same lines at the ones I listed here. I know for example that the musical performances in the night club in Dark City would fit here, but I can't bring the rest of that soundtrak to mind at the moment (gonna have to pop that in tonight and see). I have a question about a black and white film noir (at least I believe it is) that I have been trying to locate forever. I remember seeing it on tv several times when I was a child and one scene always stuck out - a man is in a convertible and a woman grabs him by the tie and ends up choking him to death.
I was wondering if any film noir aficionados here might know which film this scene is from - hopefully it has been released on blu! |

Can someone explain how these neo-noir scores actually harken to classic film noir?
