The Third Man was one of the initial nine Blu-ray releases that came in a thin digipak within a sleeve. The others were Chungking Express, The Man Who Fell to Earth, Last Year at Marienbad, Bottle Rocket, The Last Emperor, El Norte, The 400 Blows, and The Last Metro.

Either it's true that literally anything from Japan would sell better than the biggest titles from other Asian countries OR Criterion is simply more interested in releasing Japanese cinema than the cinema of other Asian countries, even if individual titles are almost guaranteed to sell more.

Just watch, Criterion will release BB Gundam anime before they ever release a film by Zhang Yimou.

I love the BBS set but it's a pretty hefty price tag if you only really want The Last Picture Show or Easy Rider.

How about the inability to release more than a handful of titles a month? That means that they have to ignore worthy films from Japan and France and Italy (or even the US) in order to make sure that they have all of the other countries represented?

Now, I don't necessarily think that the movies that they have released from Japan and France and Italy (or even the US) are more worthy than films from other countries that aren't represented in the Collection. But I don't think that trying to ensure that every country on Earth is represented is a workable solution.

And that's because no matter what they do, it won't be enough. People will still think they're giving short shrift to this country or that region.

True, but they could be doing a much better job of at least trying to release even a tiny bit more than they already are from countries other than the US, Japan France and Italy. You are giving me the impression that you're satisfied with how much/little Criterion is releasing from their "lesser represented" countries. Which is totally fine. My complaint is that I'm not and I believe that's a reasonable complaint to have. I honestly don't know why people are telling me it isn't, unless I'm just not very good at communication today.

No need ask what people think. Lee Chang Dong's Secret Sunshine has been out for 3 and a half years and is in only 550 collections on the site.

Secret Sunshine is one of my favorite Criterion releases, from one of my favorite directors. But just because I love it doesn't mean I have to pretend it's as popular as something like House (or Kurosawa for that matter). It just isn't.

Is there any reason to get the Criterion of Easy Rider (assuming that happens) if I already own the 40th Anniversary digibook from Sony? I just compared them on caps-a-holic and they're virtually identical in pq.

Yeah, I'd like to state explicitly that I am all for Criterion releasing anything they feel they can--and I think, unfortunately excepting some films and regions, the variety of genre, of type, and of style of film, is wide.

Could it be wider? Yes. Should it be wider? Yes--as much as is financially viable.

There's room for everything under their banner--they can do both, and likely need to do both to meet whatever artistic and financial obligations they feel need to be met.

Following with the point I made above--I've always considered the "important" in their masthead to be purposely nebulous. Important films bear the wacky C, but the logo alone does not make a film important. It's a loaded term, or even something of a challenge. The importance of the films is proven by the supplements and context provided within the film. That "importance" then, is arguable.

(Also, it sounds very impressive, which is fair thing to do for a company that wants to sell things.)

There are no must-haves for me in June, but I am intrigued about The Bridge, My Dinner with André, and Valerie and Her Week of Wonders.

I love Five Easy Pieces dearly, but I see no reason to double-dip on my copy from the America Lost and Found set.

At first glance, The Bridge looks like it might be a good flick to follow Ivan's Childhood on a double feature night.
