Because most of the films they release aren't 207 minutes long, so they don't need it. And it costs them more to add a second disc, that's why it costs $10 more than normal titles.

Odd. Well, that's Tati for you.
The David Lean set and Rosselini/Bergman sets do the same for me - basically impossible for the individual releases to stay straight inside the box.

If I had OCD it would probably drive me nuts.

I had an extra David Lean set I sold on ebay brand new last year, and the guy accused me of "packaging it poorly" even though I sent it in a brand new shipping box. I'm pretty sure he thought I squished it or something because of the way the individual films were "bent" inside the box - but that's just the way it was brand new. Mine is also like that, as are those other sets mentioned.

Criterion: Now that you've finally decided to listen to me, please upgrade your entire back-catalogue of Japanese films.

Surely Criterion isn't hurting for money, right? I'm grateful at how they can still make their films look so good even with the compression, but I don't want to sound very ungrateful by saying they could look better, like La Belle et La Bête. The recent french release got a 4K transfer.

Between the BBS split and the weird André boxset, quite a WTF month for Criterion.

So all that dual format drama and now everyone wanting film from boxsets re-released as stand alone....

I just can get my head around it lol seems like un needed expenses on Criterions end

What next, Qatsi Trilogy, Zatoichi, By Breakage etc...

I get the reason they may do it due to demand and people wanting the single release over boxset... but as I said its added expenses which they could pour into another new project or even an upgrade people have been desperate for.

I know we didn't lose out on releases on announcement due to the single release but still, that is money that could have been used on another project....

If they are doing this, why not bring back Dual format, Blurays and DVD editions to please everyone. Why not do a Digipak and Amaray version of a release to please everyone.

It just doesn't work...

I don't want to come across as rude or out of place but OCD isn't just about order and neatness... >.< That word is thrown around WAY to much here. If it is an issue, just display the boxset with the spine outwards (so the inner sleeves are against bookshelf wall)...

Especially since many of these are available on blu in other countries (maybe all, I haven't checked). The Killers 1946/1964 would be on the top of my list.

There's a difference between giving a big title like Five Easy Pieces a standalone release and giving something from the Brakhage sets one. This isn't even the first time Criterion have broken up box-sets, they did it with the Cassavetes set years ago.

You seem to have a grasp on Criterion's finances that none of us are privy to! Criterion wouldn't release this film separately if they didn't feel the demand was there. I expect they've done their research here, and will be confident that the (minimal) costs will pale next to the profit they expect the title to bring in.

Yes, several of those! And to echo belcherman, The Killers is one of my ten most wanted R1 upgrades.

It's too bad that my Criterion package arrived on Saturday because I ended up having to send them an e-mail asking about their replacement policy on the weekend so now it's Tuesday (they only answer messages Mon - Fri during business hours) and I still haven't gotten a response. I think I'll wait until tomorrow before getting aggravated.

Doubtful. The point was you wanted it to be added to a list of films from Criterion that people are waiting to be upgraded. I highly doubt many are waiting/expecting a movie that's been OOP for several years to be upgraded by Criterion

If they were able to reacquire the rights, don't you think they would've done so as soon as it was possible, so that they could've at least brought their DVD back into print?
