Older releases are also dirt cheap.
That being said, if it's something from 2006-2009 and I don't have it, i probably passed on it for a reason. I don't have an explicit rule, but I'm probably not buying too many blu-rays from that era anymore. I'm done adding "volume" of movies to my collection. |

To each his own but I find it to be a silly waste of money. I've been snatching up a lot of used discs and I am not fretting one bit about new transfers. If I like the movie enough, yeah I may re-purchase, but thats not likely to happen with much frequency. |

After a couple scattered incidents like The Third Man and Bird with the Crystal Plumage getting yanked and replaced with bad re-releases from different labels and the first version skyrocketing in price, I prioritize old discs I want over new ones :P

If the new version is dirt cheap, I will sell the old release and buy the new one. eg. Terminator/RoboCop/Rocky... If not, I just keep the "old" version which is also excellent. eg. Sound of Music/Wizard of Oz... |

The Terminator, Robocop, and Rocky all had new 4K scans and they definitely blow away their previous releases!

I double dip for a new restorations if it's really an improvement, I don't really care about extras, I very rarely watch them, I would rather spend the time watching a different movie, but thats just me.

The original Rocky and RoboCop releases were fine. The new restorations are better but I could live with the first releases. |

Rocky still looks a bit soft even with the 4K scan, so perhaps I can buy the case for this one. But I never did have the older disc of Rocky to compare. In either case, if there actually is a new restoration/remaster, that's where I officially DO stay away from old releases. I don't worry so much about releases that may never come, but if there is officially an improved release that's where I completely change my tune. I've done the "upgrade" thing dozens of times, always selling the old version on ebay first. Since I mostly only buy during time of extreme sales (FOXconnect flash sales, Criterion sales, WBshop sales, etc) - I generally end up ahead anyway even when doing upgrades. |

Either way, I don't call this a massive upgrade: http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergl...2852&lossless= Gangs of New York on the other hand... |

I agree with the age comment as the older I grow, the less important it is to get the next best and greatest. As long as I have the film, I'm pretty happy. I also have run out of room and don't have enough time to watch everything I own. Unless it's a horrible presentation where it looks like VHS/DVD quality while projected on our screen, I don't regret previous buys or jones for a new one. |
