Welp, Marnie arrived. It arrived exactly as I asked from Amazon -- in reinforced packaging. It appeared to be in mint condition, which made me *quite* happy - then, after I took these pictures, I noticed what looked like a thin gash from a razor blade on the cover. It's not on the plastic baggie, so I have NO idea how it happened. But whatever. I'm not going to stress about it -- it's here and we'll be watching once I get back from the grocery store! And whatever happened, it's not Amazon's fault.

Here are my obligatory pics, plus another color comparison with The Wind Rises.

Enjoy! I want to do a video about these, but I'm not doing that until after Ghibli says "yes" or "no" to Ocean Waves.

I think Howl's Moving Castle and Marnie are the only ones that include also the English title?
I don't like that. I would prefer if it was the same for all Ghibli Blurays.
Japanese title only.

edit: Oh, it's The Cat Returns and Tales from Earthsea too.

Can I ask something:
I assume the Big Japanese letters in every Bluray is the title.
What are the smaller letters?
Director? (I see it's the same in Wind Rises and Spirited Away)

Also I see the 4 last letters are the same in these 3 releases.
So that says "a film by..." or "directed by..."?

Yeah, you are basically right:

監督 = director
作品 = work (as in a "work of art")

宮崎駿 = Miyazaki Hayao
米林宏昌 = Yonebayashi Hiromasa

It's hard to translate it directly in a way that sounds good in English, since there are no prepositions in the Japanese text there, but it would translate to some variation on "A work/film (directed) by...." (or for the most literal translation, probably "A ...... directed work," which would sound kinda awkward.)

All of the other ones list the director as well, and others list other prominent credits like producer and writer (usually Miyazaki when he is not the director).

Yep, sure is. It's really not that bad, for the most part, though the right edge of it was slashed enough to show a tiny fleck of white. Ah, well

Just finished the movie. Not an instant favorite, but very sweet, nonetheless, and it all comes together really well. A nice way for the Studio to go out, if it's really the end of features for them.

Definitely not an instant favorite, but a movie that really grows over time. With Yonebayashi gone from Studio Ghibli, their 2 major directors retired from features, it will be interesting to see what they will do in the future.

Arrived today! I'm gonna start with Kaguya, then Marnie. Both will be firsts for me!

Still kicking myself for missing Kaguya in theaters twice! I was in Japan for a couple of weeks before it came out and just missed the premiere by a few days.... but the scheduling just didn't work out since I was there to attend a friend's wedding. Then, the movie came to a local arthouse theater near where I live, but I couldn't make it during the week that it was playing. So I'm finally gonna get to see it!

Oh, I don't see a Japanese Le Roi et l'oiseau here in the database!
Does it have English subtitles??

By the way, for those of you who saw Marnie, in what rank would you put it?
Among Ghibli's worst? Maybe somewhere in the middle?

Well, looks like some major catastrophe has befallen my Marnie shipment - It has totally disappeared from tracking after leaving the Cincinnati airport at 10 am yesterday morning, with no update since. It's usually only a 1.5 hour hop to Harrisburg International airport in PA, where it then goes out on a delivery truck to my house, so either the plane crashed(!) or it is sitting out on the tarmac somewhere with issues. Worst part is, DHL just changed the Estimated Delivery sometime overnight from today's date to "Currently Unavailable."

EDIT: So it just arrived in Harrisburg 15 minutes ago, only 22 hours after it left Cincinnati - must have gotten put on a truck instead of going by air, or else they had mechanical problems with the plane or something. Hopefully it arrived early enough in Harrisburg this morning to get put on an outgoing delivery truck for today, and not have to sit and wait for tomorrow's truck...

I somehow missed the news he had officially left the studio. Geez, I wonder what's going to happen with them in the long run.

Looking forward to watching tonight. Feels good to be finally done with this Ghibli collecting, stressful and expensive shit that I'm content with finishing.

Bonus Whisper of the Heart Manga to go in my massive Manga collection. It's an awesome read.

Cheers chums.
