Exclamation Venom movie news:

The Hollywood reporter has an update (kind of) of Sony's plans with Venom:

The studio is developing the project, based on the gooey nemesis who appeared in "Spider-Man 3" and is hoping the character could serve as an antidote to the aging "Spider-Man" franchise in the way that Fox has used Wolverine to add longevity to its "X-Men" franchise.

But getting any spinoff off the ground, let alone one centered on a villain, can be tricky.

The studio had commissioned a draft of the script from Jacob Estes, a writer of the specialty film "Mean Creek," released several years ago by Paramount Classics. He's also attached to the Plan B drama "The Gifted."

But the studio is considering going in a different direction from Estes' script and is seeking writers for a new draft.

Casting also is no simple matter. Topher Grace played the character in the film, but agents have been eyeing the role for their clients, as Sony is not yet convinced the actor can carry a tentpole picture.

The poor reception to Spider-man 3 will shut out any chance of a Venom movie.

Yeah, because Spider-man 3 didn't make any money.

Venom is my favorite Spidey villain, so I'd like to see it. Just recast him because Topher was awful.

Thought this was an "apology" spinoff for SM3--
Like Universal deliberately making "Scorpion King" to apologize for The Rock only being in "Mummy Returns" for three minutes...

LMAO, if Venom gets the same treatment the Scorpion King did, the fanboys will be even more pissed than they were about Spidey 3.

I think that this is the perfect way for the Spiderman series to redeem itself for its poor protrayal of Venom in Spiderman 3.

I'm not too sure about everyone else, but I was a die-hard Spiderman cartoon watching fiend as well as played all of the video games. So far Venom was my favorite villian so it'll definately be a sigh of relief if they properly showcase him in this movie.

I was a HUGE venom fan back in the McFarlane days of Spidey 298 to 318 but I totally agree that they will most likely screw this whole thing up.

Also...is that story true about The Scorpion King being an apology???

The Rock SSSSSSSSSSSSucked in The Mummy 2 and The entire Scorpion King movie was WRETCHED.

I think the scorpion king movie was made on Vince's dime and Universal just released it. I'm almost positive that while it is a universal release, it is a WWE Films production.

Anyone??

Default Spidey 3

Spider-man 3 did alright at box office. It did extremely well overseas. I can not imagine that it did bad on dvd rentals and sales. That is not including merchandise and promotionals.

Boxofficemojo.com lists spider-man 3 making the following coin in domestic and foreign theaters. Initially the domestic box office looks good, but considering the movie costs $280 million to make. Theater owners get roughly half of all ticket sales. Ergo, it needed to double $280 to make money. We're not even considering advertising.

Domestic: $336,530,303 37.8%
+ Foreign: $554,341,323 62.2%

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

= Worldwide: $890,871,626

They better keep Topher Grace... I think he did a good job the first time and would have lots of room to spread his wings in a spin-off.

Spider-man 3 obviously was successful in monetary terms, but virtually no one thinks it is a good movie. Popular opinion of it is not good. I think in the long run it will be viewed very similarly to what people think of "Batman and Robin"...

spider-man 3 was nowhere near as bad as batman and robin. and it will never be that bad. spider-man 3 had it flaws it's nothing like batman and robin. batman and robin may well be one of the worst comic book movies made.
