This past January, I went to a Landfill Operator Certification course for a week so that I could inspect landfills as a part of my job. The course was extensively thorough, and it covered all of the aspects of a landfill operation from the siting requirements through the closing process. Landfill operators work according to a design plan that necessitates a certain amount of time that they are able to take in garbage before closing, and most landfills have to be maintained throughout their closure for a minimum of 30 years. This is a hugely expensive undertaking for both the operators and the communities in general.

So, please do not throw your Blu-rays away. There is no need for them to go to a landfill. Somewhere out there, someone will be happy to own your disc.

I always leave unwanted Blu-rays or DVDs that cannot be sold on the mailbox area of my apartment complex, and they are always gone within hours. It's nice to know that they found a home somewhere instead of ending up in a landfill.
