Default Mecha on blu ray

I have been thinking of checking out my first mecha series. I have no idea where to begin though. I tried watching the Evangellion movies but couldn't get through the first one. It was too confusing and not all that interesting to me. Series that I've really enjoyed include, Shiki, DBZ, Deadman wonderland, death note, Witchblade, FMA original and Brotherhood, Black Butler. I'm fairly easy to please, I'm just looking for a few good options to start with. My only stipulation is that it's easily available on blu ray. If it's only available on dvd, but really cheap I would consider it, but would really rather blu ray. Thank you for any and all suggestions!

Lots of Shounen here. Have you considered maybe you aren't a mecha fan?

Might try Gurren Lagann, or Code Geass for a "mecha light" show.

I just don't know where to start with mecha shows. I was thinking about code geass already but it seems like the dvds will be too expensive and difficult to get ahold of and pretty sure theres no US blu ray release?

I think you should look and see what's available for streaming. That way you can sample many shows before you find out what you like.

Evangelion movies are not friendly to us novices, that's for sure. You might try the Evangelion television series if possible, but even that's pretty heavy on recurrent themes that you or I may not be able to fully understand and appreciate. Knights of Sidonia is pretty decent, especially if you're into physics and space travel. That one's on Netflix. Other good starting points are Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet, Patlabor or Gunbuster/Diebuster. All those are pretty entry'level'ish.

Don't go anywhere near Gundam :P

If you like shounen, then consider
[Show spoiler] Attack on Titan
. I gotta be honest, 4 episodes to move a freaking rock...typical shounen!

That's not mecha, it's not even super-suit level since they just fly around with strap-on gear.

As someone else stated, the movies are a really bad place to start.

I would say definitely go with Code Geass considering what you like. Really can't imagine you not liking it.

Is code geass available on streaming services? I really don't want to spend that much on it DX. What about broken blade or full Metal panic? I'm going to get attack on titan as well when i order whichever mecha show i decide on, its definitely not a mecha show though lol. Thank you for all of your suggestions so far!

Alright, man. I'll give you some points for creativity on a cyborg mecha (Eva) being like the transformation. But it's still not piloting a robot with computerized controls.

Not sure about Code Geass. That's a Bandai title, but Funimation owns the right now. All three seasons of Full Metal Panic and Broken Blade are on Hulu.

Two I'd recommend for you:

Break Blade/Broken Blade OVA (have not seen the newer TV series version)... gorgeous on Blu-ray...

Full Metal Panic (three seasons of three different type shows - season 1 is action/comedy/drama, Season 2 is full on High school Comedy, and Season 3 is a darker MA rated action show like Black Lagoon...), though the first two seasons aren't that much better quality on Blu-ray than the DVD's, Season 3 however is really nice upgrade over the DVD:

Season 1:

Season 2:

Season 3:

Not your typical Mecha shows...

Also if you want a full on hilarious Giant Robo Mecha show, but not on Blu-ray, check out Dai-Guard... one of my favorite comedies, evaR (English Dub absolutely nails it and is the only way to watch it!)

And if you want a cool Sci-Fi realistic Mecha short film, check out "A Farewell to Weapons" from Short Peace...

Another property that falls into the mecha category would be the Appleseed franchise... All three movies are good, the latest looks really nice on Blu-Ray:

Thanks! Haha.

But seriously, I'd recommend Eureka Seven (not AO), Patlabor, and Muv Luv for other recommendations. If you're okay with JP imports, I personally love Rahxephon.

And if you like something more of like mecha meets pervy Anime set in the Meiji-era, then Dai-Shogun would be up your alley.

Guyver is also good in that subgenre.

If you're setting him up for harem/ecchi, don't forget Infinite Stratos.

It's only a small part of the overall story as it's been revealed thus far.
I mean, we only have
[Show spoiler]TWO confirmed cases of it. Nothing to suggest every Titan has a human pilot. I know we have dat basement to see still,
but the show as it stands now is more humanitarian-focused.

Overall, it's still a mideval-setting, David vs Goliath-monsters show.

Also, I think you got that Full Metal Panic seasons mixed up. Season 2 is more serious, and the third season is the comedy-focused one.

Edit: Nobody is mentioning Valvrave I notice. Was it really that bad?

The first cour I enjoyed. It had promise, and I was interested in the
[Show spoiler]200 year time skip
and where that was going. The second cour kinda lost its marbles.

First cour in a nutshell:

Yup or Cross Ange(though that's more just ecchi).
