Just because something is not explained, why give up? We get clues about what happened and an idea from the finale of season 1. The spin off is set earlier and that should give some more clues to the origin.

In that case, aren't all "Living Dead" movies a waste of time? None are explained, at least none of the real ones that matter. Name-only cash-ins that make up their own silly explanations don't count.
I enjoy shows and films that don't point things out and leave them open for interpretation, or are very subtle in explaining. To each their own though, you will be missing out on the best seasons (IMO of course) of the best zombie TV show ever.
Plus, I don't think it's been explained ever, even in the comics.

I'm going to go back and watch this season, especially now that seasons 4 and 5 have been so great. The only other TV series I've ever purchased on home video has been The Twilight Zone, so that puts The Walking Dead in pretty rare company.

Over the last couple of weeks, I watched the first season again. It's much more of a self contained movie, being only six episodes, and all heavily Darabont influenced. I loved it, and I think that the first season especially is a fine spiritual descendant of the Romero films.

I've never had an interests in reading comic books of any kind but, that's a major plot hole in the series for me, and I no longer want to see it.

The good thing about this site is, it's fairly easy to figure out the people that you're just going to fundamentally disagree with, on a good many things. Those movie reviews you wrote helped me out in that regard. Rock on with your bad self.

The meaning to life is a question that's never been answered. Would you say that's a major plot hole in the world and you no longer want to live anymore?

I just want to say that I unfortunately started watching this show back in October and I say unfortunately because had I known just how great this series was, I would have been watching from the beginning. As I plowed through the seasons to get caught up to season 5, the last thing on my mind as I was watching the episodes was the cause of the zombie apocalypse. It really doesn't matter, at least right now. Maybe the writers will make it matter later on. What does matter is that it happened and now the characters on the show have to "deal with it". All I'll say is that giving up on this show because we don't learn the cause of the zombie apocalypse is a shame because there are so many incredible characters/storylines that you would be missing out on. I've watched a lot of great shows but this one is just on a different level.

Season 2 is very underrated and unfairly criticized in my opinion.

It's a fantastic season of television.

[Show spoiler] Specially Season 4 (the worse IMO) when the group split up after the fall of the prison, and then we got treated with a bunch of boring episodes focusing on each separate group member story lines
.
[Show spoiler]Also, Way too many great characters gone now, Shane, Dale, Hershel, Andrea, T-Dog to name a few....none of the most recent characters holds a candle to the originals IMO.
I find it odd that you put spoilers around part of your post, but the not the part that listed a bunch of major deaths on the show.

They are doing a second series called "Fear The Walking dead". The pilot starts at the beginning of the Zombie outbreak with a different set of Characters, set in L.A.

Yup...come end of summer, I'll be watching it. Just hoping that in terms of quality, it's on par with The Walking Dead.

It plays better on Blu-ray where you can watch the episodes back to back instead of waiting to watch it each week which many found be a bit tedious.

Agreed. Too many people complained that it was 'too slow'. It's like The Sopranos... people just wanted to see characters getting 'whacked' all the time. For me, season 2 is probably the best.

I got in late also and picked up the first 3 season when S3 came out on blu. After watching season 4 while it played, and then on blu, it's much easier to keep up with stuff binge watching it. Esp now with those long mid-season breaks.

100%. I don't get the complaints at all. I loved the dynamic between Shane and Dale, the friction between the group and Herschell's family and earning his trust, there were some of the best episodes of the series and some truly interesting episode-length stories in an overall well-constructed season arc. Shane really was one of the very best characters on the show. It might have the best season finale of the series too.

This is how I'd rate the seasons so far:
1 & 2
5
3
4

Though there' still some fantastic episodes even in the weaker seasons.

Edit: and yes, I watched Season 2 week to week.

I miiiiight have to go with the same order... although it still hurts that season 5 has so much going for it and has to be ranked so highly. That hospital side plot was just... just awful.

It didn't really serve much purpose, I did like when Daryl and Carol were in the city though, that episode was a nice callback to the urban setting of the first season and it had a cool (if somewhat physics-defying) setpiece on the bridge and some great music by McCreary. These last few episodes have been pretty solid and interesting though, I've actually been very much looking forward to them week to week lately. Excited for the 90 minute season finale tomorrow night! I want
[Show spoiler]Morgan
to show up!

Seasons 1, 2 and 3 are all awesome imo.

4 and 5 are a mixed bag of a few great episodes and quite a few underwhelming ones.
