I also found the wooden shield but I haven't bothered to use it because I imagine it's not that great.

Just for the hell of it I screencapped myself in the doll dress for the lulz. I made my character The Joker from Batman.

how funny would it be if they figured everyone would think that sicne they touted this as a more offensive minded game and the shield blocked 100% of all attacks ..

What was the last boss you killed?
I don't know why you ask about patience. I pretty much did nothing for five days but play this game. That's a fair amount of time to give it. The last boss wos Rom the Spider. I had to solo him, because I could not find anyone to join my game, which was funny, because I was able to find a few to join myself. It took a whole bunch of tries, because one minispider on the head was a kill, if you did not have a full health bar. Not much to learn about that pattern. Easy to know what to do. You just get lucky once. I'm not special that way. Even watch the PowerPyx videos, or someone else. Even those guys have a time or two in their videos where they take big damage and are lucky to have a hair of health left.

I played all of the Souls games. Soloed them all. Except for Smelter Demon in DSII which was an optional boss, anyway. I could never beat that guy solo. I never really beat Nashandra by myself, either, but it was only after I had finished my third game, that I learned the dark magic clouds she spawns could be killed. Knowing that made her pretty easy.

If you played those games as a melee character with high DEX and were very successful, I can see why this would appeal to you. But that's the only playstyle from those games that translates to Bloodborne. Maybe you liked dual-wielding? There is a lot to be said for a greatshield with high stability that would absorb a big hit without depleting you stamina bar. Those games were all about patience. Not being greedy. Reading the enemy patterns. If you were big and slow, you took the hit with your shield and waited for an opening when you had enough stamina and took as many swings as you could safely get away. It also gave you more time to study your enemy.

It probably takes more skill to master this game. It definitely takes fast adaptation and better reflexes. Probably more ability than I have at this time.

Am I reading online right that the only way to level up is by trading insight and the only way to get it is by first encountering a boss and defeating it? I've put in maybe 20 hours and am still playing the same damn two areas again and again. Haven't even gotten to the boss yet.

You get insight for encountering a boss and defeating a boss. You can also use the madmans skull to get insight. All you need is one insight in order to start leveling up. You trade blood echoes to level up.

The first boss is on the bridge with the 2 wolves.

That would be kind of hilarious actually.

I've never been big on dual wielding. For most of the game I have my weapon in my right hand and the torch in my left. I never was great at parry/repost so I don't use the gun all that often. As for the spider boss I actually took the time to kill all the little spiders before I attacked the boss. Those guys keep on you and the boss constantly turns to face you when you try to get at his side, much easier when it's just one on one because I like to do my charge attack with the hunter axe when I wield it two handed. That spin move is great for bosses and large mobs.

That's why I still think Demon Souls is the hardest game still. It involved a lot more technique and studying of your opponent.

I believe you only 1 insight to open the house in the Hunter's Dream area, as well as awakening the doll. She is the one to go to to level up using your blood echoes. Encountering a boss gives you 1 insight and killing them will give you 3 more.

I'm in Old Yharman and the Hunter keeps shooting me and sprinting away. How do I kill him? Do I have to kill him?

Also, I just found the shortcut by that hunter. Where can I find the 2nd shortcut that's closer to the 3rd boss. I'm lvl 27. Is this enough to beat him?

Ok, so that locked gate outside the clinic near the beginning? I have the entrance...

In the Forbidden woods part - over bridge, past first swinging trap, left of the small gate (and second swinging trap) - up past the dog cages........entrance leads to water cave with worms and giants. Path opposite wall, left of where you enter Take an antidote (two found on dead body before cave)

Leads to backside of clinic and some nice goodies

Ahh so I awaken the doll after getting one insight? And then I can level up using blood echoes. Well at least I can get the insight by getting killed by the boss.

Exactly, if you don't want to die and you have any skulls those give you insight to.

No, she was not even there.

Prior to that, I was 'still figuring it out' and so I went to the door you talk to, and started whacking at it, until she says something like, 'that will be enough of that;someone should stop you'

there was a blue dude, some items and an empty room where I saw notes to the effect of 'beware the woman' or whatnot.

I never saw the crow lady till much later. Guess I play too violent. Scares the NPCs away

Hmm. I never went back since the first time. I did not go all the way in. I wonder if she left my game, too. Funny what you say about the NPC's. I was in someone else's game at the spider boss, and before jumping in, they killed the old guy pointing toward the ledge.

That won't scare her off, hitting the door at the top of the stairs. I did it a few times to see if she would say something different and she was still there later when I sent people to her. When you took the backroute where the blue guys were there is a staircase and when you approace it she should talk and tell you not to come up. If you leave immediately she'll be back at the door again but if you go up and piss her off you won't be able to get a certain item later.

In case it hasn't been posted yet, pretty awesome progression map with zone interconnections.

Because of potential spoilers (and size), putting behind spoiler brackets:

Is this game heavy-RPG? Or a little lighter, say like Mass Effect? I'm so desperate to play anything that if this were not so RPG in it's gameplay, I'd definitely pick it up.

Man, I thought I was having a really bad go at it today, more so than usual. I was dying left and right from henchmen I was one hitting yesterday. Now I discover my weapon needs to be repaired occasionally I spent a good couple of my morning hours cursing up a storm.
