I could honestly care less if Alvin was beside 2001 or Casablanca. I have small children so it's a non issue for me. But if you're single and I saw Alvin & the Chipmunks sitting in your library of Blu's beside 2001 or Casablanca ...not cool man...not cool

I care even if no one who ever sees my shelf does.

these are my movies, these are not. that seems a fair reason for someone to separate a collection.

I personally don't want to own, let's say, alvin in the chipmunks. I'd still buy it for my kid but I wouldn't consider it part of my collection. because I care about quality, not quantity.

I'm not hyper anal about it and it doesn't seem weird to me that some people don't care, or don't get it, but I do. I do it for me, not for the people who might see my collection.

edit - I sould state I don't actually have a kid, but I deal with the same stuff regarding my collection and my fathers. mine is much much larger and in my room where as his is near our tv. it's worth it to me to have to run upstairs to get what i want to watch just to keep the stuff divided and claimed as my own.

In my CD collection (nearing or surpassed 700) the vast majority of Heavy Metal is harmoniously infused with the couple of dozen classical CD's, as it should be. My movies are no different. Although I am considering segregating TV seasons from movies. And I want to put Batman Begins right with The Dark Knight, but that will throw the alphabetical peace out of whack.

^^-- you're one of those "Alphabetical" people

If I weren't so lazy, I'd do that.... heck, I might be able to find stuff!!! My "system" would have to change though, because I put the "recently watched" to the top/left (depending on how they're stacked) so it's easier to see what I haven't viewed in awhile.

in tiny letters on the spine with a Sharpie pen just put Batman just right before it says The Dark Knight

Well, they'll likely come out with a box set for the Batman films, so that should solve that problem.

Nice to see a thread (albeit one that's four years old) on this topic already!

Growing up, I usually kept my media collections in my room because I was a teenager and that's just how it was. I'll be living with my GF soon though, so it just got me wondering how others feel about it. How many members keep their collection separate from the movie collection of their signifcant other/family?

Me and my partner have shelves around the TV area and keep each of our collections separate. I like to keep mine in order and have a few different 'sections'... he has his own way of ordering his. He doesn't 'collect' as much as me (and in fact mainly has DVDs, but I still have plenty as well) but still wouldn't really have any desire to mix them up with mine. I wouldn't have thought it's that weird to have shelves for movies, books or anything really separated by family member, not really sure why it would be an issue, but maybe that's just my experience.

All our movies are right next to each other in the collection. If someone wants to come in my home and make fun of the Santa Clause being next to Sunshine then they are going to be in a world of hurt. Trust me, after serving two combat tours overseas, I have learned to stop sweating the small crap
