well I'm not to sure if you want to stick with projection but, I read that consumer reports did a test on plasma and LCDs. They found that LCDs have a very low 5-7% failure rate and plasmas were even less. I think the winner was a panasonic plasma that had a low 3% failure rate. So as far as it lasting a long time you really can't go wrong. Also, my advice to you is that since you do plan on keeping your set for "a long time" I say you get a top quality/model tv that is out on the market now. Because in a few months those low end/mid end TVs will no longer be up to par with the new stuff coming out and you'll be wishing you had that instead. I say wait till the new 9 series samsung comes out. LED backlighting and 120hz you really can't go wrong with that.
