Yes obviously. Because you can purchase sd which I do for TV shows a lot of times. Show me apples updated policy on older digital copies |

Above, I already watched one of my SD movies on my ATV3 and approximated the bandwidth used and noted it was not possible for it to be HD. So far what you've said conflicts with people's experience and what's displayed on the ATV itself. |

Ok let's do this. If you have an iPad, iPhone, or Mac AirPlay the digital copy to the Apple TV. These devices stream in the definition they originally were purchased as. Bring up a scene and compare. You'll see that it's definitely HD when the Apple TV streams it vs. one of these devices. Look at lord of the rings. It's clearly HD but was downloaded as SD. Your eyes won't lie. The fact that's e are even debating this tells me you actually can't truky tell if it's sd. So what's that say? It's not sd.

This has been something I wondered about for a while. Most SD movies I've streamed appear to play in HD to me (60" 1080p Sony HDTV). I was told it could be the ATV3 or my TV upconverting, but I'm not sure what to believe...
I've tested it out with a couple different movies (Coraline, which I have both in SD and HD, and Monster, which I have in SD, and a family share member has in HD). Couldn't tell the difference. On the other hand, Pink Panther 2 and Angels & Demons (from xml code redemptions) clearly play in SD. But I think those codes may be linked to older source files, as they don't even have subtitles (whereas the current SD versions in the iTunes Store do). |

Like I said if you have the blindside digital copy the proof is in the pudding. iTunes plus is there as a preview and it says "this HD purchase..." They just don't give you the plus features because this digital copy was released before apple started doing that. If you had the sd copy the plus box wouldn't even be there. It only is visible with HD purchases. Believe what you guys want im just letting you know what's what. If you don't have the blind side. Check the dark knight. Same thing. iTunes extras box is there. And describes it as you having the HD purchase but you aren't given the extras because you only have the ability to stream the HD version from Apple TV. You never bought it. Apple gave the upgrade for free to Apple TV owners to stream and they aren't giving the plus features to you now also. They aren't as generous as Disney who upgraded every body and even gave digital copies to some movies that didn't originally have them like the movie up.

My apologies. But what Disney did do is turn all the older movies that did not come with itunes extras to having them with a free upgrade. Also giving you the HD version for free to download upgraded from an sd download.

And like I said if you're not given the HD version of movies like Dark Knight on Apple TV. Why is the itunes extras box visible. Which if it was an sd copy it wouldn't even be there on the screen in any way shape or form. They give you the HD version for stream only through the Apple TV. Stop fighting it and accept

Why don't you find the part of the announcement where Apple said all SD was going to be HD on ATV3? Try starting around the 11 minute mark. Or find a news article about it. That would be pretty notable. Or show some kind of actual evidence of what you're suggesting. So far there's nothing, just claims. Quote:
In the case of Coraline, it took 8:47 to complete the download (527 seconds). The two file sizes are 1.5GB for SD and 4.09 for HD. Knowing these: 1.5 * 8000 / 527 = 22.77 Mbps 4.09 * 8000 / 527 = 62.09 Mbps I can tell you that my Internet connection, while solid, doesn't exceed 60Mbps so that's not possible. And here's a chart of the bandwidth used at the time: Everything is consistent with an SD file, not an HD file. Now that doesn't mean that some people in some other situations get an HD stream for some reason. But I've tried watching 5 or 6 movies now and they're all consistently SD. Also, substitute 8000 with 8590 in the formula if Apple uses GB as 2^30 instead of 10^9. But the numbers will be close enough either way. |

I have a grand total of three iTunes SD movies. One of which I bought several years ago and two others were redeemed within the last year as digital copies. Streaming each of these movies directly from the iTunes Cloud, without a doubt, they are all streaming in SD format.
Perhaps viewing these movies on a smaller TV or mobile device might lead one to conclude they are streaming in HD. |

[QUOTE=Zu Nim;10634409]Yes, and those movies are indicated as HD versions. They're not SD versions that are super-secretly available as HD.
They were sd. Disney upgraded them. |

This was the only article I could find from the time that references the announcement. As you can see in the article it says all movies streaming from the cloud are HD. The video at the bottom of the article if you watch it also mentions it for Star Trek and shows the menu. The menu of the movie in the video also does not indicate it is HD or SD. Apple announced this years ago like I said. I'll look for more material for you. But like I said. From what I have always understood is if it streams from the cloud its HD. The only reason I say only Apple TV is because in my opinion it looks worse on the iPad. But for all I know that could be just me thinking that. Based on articles from that time that time based off the announcement any digital copy you previously owned that's streaming from the cloud will stream in its HD counter part. If you download it's in the format it was given originally. Don't fight it. Just accept its HD. Last edited by Semp1; 04-03-2015 at 04:21 PM. |

Dude- do you think Apple wouldn't announce that as a perk or an upgrade? Do you think they'd just upgrade all SD to HD via streaming and not say anything?
Provide a quote and I'll believe you. Until then, I don't get the "debate". |

They did announce it. I just found you an article after the announcement. I originally looked for this info based on my memory after every one asked for an article. I posted this based on that 3 year old announcement I remembered. This has been known. It's not even a debate in my opinion. Obviously two random people. My self and this guy who wrote the article aren't talking to each other and making the same thing up. Clearly this was announced which I remember and which this article and video from 2012 references.
