The 3D in Planet Dinosaur is fairly strong. There are some good pop outs of the dinosaur's heads, they stick right out of the screen. The program itself, however, if fairly typical of dino docs, and this is only one episode of what appears to be a longer series. The entire thing seems to be animated and not dinosaurs inserted into a real world, like Walking with Dinosaurs.

You are right that all the environments were created digitally and with matte paintings. The reason is that vegitation was very different then from what now. Grass didn't exist for instance.
