I was talking about Apollo 13.

It is very unlikely the Waterworld extended edition will ever be presented in HD. It was created for television IN standard-def, so the original master is what you see on the DVD.

That's pretty weak reasoning for why we would never see it.

There are so many TV shows that were created for television/SD where the original film elements were dug up, remastered in HD and then released in blu ray.

An example that is closer to the Waterworld extended edition is the German release of the Das Boot mini series TV show, which is available in Germany in decent HD quality.

I'd say that the reason we won't see it on blu ray is the poor quality of the movie, along with a lack of interest.

The cinema remaster will be playing, I am not saying that 100% will not end up on disc but I do not believe a press release from Universal I want to see the disc

Just wishful thinking at the moment.

Weird Science didn't get a new remaster. It's the same old shit-fest we had 18 months back ...

Cost would be the only reason. Waterworld is a fantastic action-adventure.

Agreed, Waterworld is wonderful entertainment. Almost up there with the Mad Max trilogy for me.

Yeah really need a new scan on this, still holding my thumbs Don't need a expensive 4K scan but the colors on the old disc is not very good, some sky look purple and such. There is a fanproject going on to fix this and more. Based on the Italian hd-dvd which has a little better quality compared to all blu-ray discs. Hoping this disc will remedy all

I doubt this is a remastered or expanded package. If it was, we would have heard something by now. We're less than a month away and still nothing. This is just a 20th Anniversary banner with a UV copy included.

Universal's new Apollo 13 release (complete with remastered picture) has been trumpeted for a while now, with film festival showings and press releases and that's not out until June.

The same is true of Warner Bros new Goodfellas blu-ray - Film festivals, cast and crew Q&As, press releases, the whole nine yards.

Now i'm not saying Waterworld would get shown at film festivals and have cast and crew Q&As scheduled (I wish) but something like Casino definitely would. The 'Get Shorty - 20th Anniversary Edition' is also coming out in the USA at the same time and there's no news on that either so I suspect it's just been repackaged.
As much as it pains me to say it, this is very sound logic and I think you may unfortunately be spot on for Waterworld. We would've heard more by now.

Surprisingly few - Star Trek, Lost in Space, one 70s Doctor Who, The Persuaders, The Professional and The Prisoner are all that spring to mind. A lot of TV shows just use old masters on Bluray with no restoration, while I can't think of any extended TV version of a film that's been tidied up and remastered for Bluray. Midway includes a few scenes from the TV version as extras but most extended for TV versions only got a couple of plays on US TV anyway before being forgotten. On a backcatalogue title these days there's not much incentive to go to the expense of remastering what they'd regard at best as a three hour extra. The most you could probably hope for is an SD presentation, and that may be more likely on a German release than a UK one.

In that case Das Boot was originally made as both a film and a mini-series and, with the mini-series a huge success in Germany and the UK, decent master materials were preserved because it's a title that has a long afterlife. Most people don't even know there is an extended cut of Waterworld, so it's not as if Universal are flooded with complaints, especially since the DVD release of both cuts apparently didn't sell very well.

So, we don't know yet what is the content of this new release?

I suspect just a repackage, to add the ultraviolet or whatever is that called.

another one of those 'watch it anywhere' covers.

i hate those things, it's such bullshit.

i took one of those 'watch it anywhere' movies to my school last week and when i started to watch it in class on my laptop my teacher came to me and told me i couldn't watch it there.

i showed him the 'watch it anywhere' sign on the blu-ray case and he asked me to leave the classroom.

So now all it takes for something to be called a special edition is an ultraviolet code. What a joke. They may as well just plaster a "Special Physical Media Edition" banner across the top. While they're at it, just stamp the UV code on the disc to save paper.

The fact that Weird Science turned out to be the same old disc really lowered the chances of these other ones being improvements.
