Default Xbox 360 $199???

What impact will this have? Will Sony follow suit given the two recent price cuts by Microsoft?

no it won't follow because it' still too damn expensive to make it. People need to realize there is a blu-ray player on top of everything else. I know 500$ is a lot of money but if your upgrading your computer and you want a video card or a motherboard / cpu it's going to cost you the same thing if not more. PS3 is a bargain at this price and i would have gladly paid the full price when it first came out as well.

i expect a bigger bundle / cheaper price around the holidays however

That's also for the arcade version, which is just about the worst way to get an xbox.

Arcade 1080i - component
Elite 1080p - hdmi

Arcade 000GB hard drive
Elite 120GB hard drive

So there is a bit of a difference.

The arcade comes with a memory card. The people they are targetting at that price aren't going to care about the harddrive, and if they do, they can buy one later on or get a used one fairly cheaply.

And an hdmi cable is what, 5 bucks?

Reducing the price of entry significantly=great idea, should have happened in the spring.

The point of the elite is if you want to start off with a 120gb hd, and not the current 60gb...or the memory card if you want the arcade.

both have 1080p upscaled HDMI, and the elite costs £300 while the arcade costs £150, big diference considering you can get a PS3 120GB HDD for about £60

The price drop wont do crap for the 360. Small bump. The release slate for the 360 is pathetically bad this holiday season, the PS3 is going to really clean up, not to mention Blu-ray is going to be so freakin popular with releases like The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Indy 4 and a lot more. Microsoft needs their prices to plummet just to keep status quo.

Well, can't you see that's the last act of a desperate man?

We don't care if it's the first act of "Henry V,"

To a certain extent, "yeah" this will hurt Blu-sales/PS3 sales..... Holidays/Birthdays, your average soccer mom sees the chance to make her 13 year old son very happy with a brand new game console for $200, when she can't afford $400 for a PS3, it's a no-brainer......

The average consumer doesn't know the difference, doesn't know what blu-ray is, and doesn't care to compare them for what they are/do since the price speaks for itself.

I use my PS3s for blu-ray only, so anything to do with Xbox was never a concern to me.... it was between "Stand-alone" and "PS3"

I see a lot of posts of people who got a PS3, then kinda "fell into" Blu-ray as a result...... so I think it WILL hurt PS3 sales.... and I do realize a lot of 17-21 year olds purchased their own PS3, and researched, etc etc.... but the mass-adoption market is probably parents buying for their kids

What I see being the choices around Xmas:

Would a buyer prefer

a Free 80Gb PS3 (with a 40" well priced LCD TV set)?
a $399 80Gb PS3 with 5 free Blu Rays or 1-2 Free game ?(so $399 instead of $500)

or a $199 Xbox that has no HDD, no Wifi, and no Blu Ray ?

This being said, for your average Joe Schmo, if they see no interest in HD (in which case why buying a HD console instead of a Wii then ? O.o), they still might find the $199 an interesting price point.
It is still entirely possible that Sony would opt for a temporary price drop to $299 if they were to think that this $199 price point would damage their sales too much, but somehow, with Blu Ray being the "cool HD toy" of the end of 2008 with people buying new TV sets in preparation for Feb. 2009, I don't see this being too much of a concern.

They also released the Elite to deal with the Red Rings of Death. Which I have had on other Xbox 360's but not the Elite...knock on wood

Are they still doing the 5 free movie promo?

you're completely disregarding the number of people who will buy a game console for the "Tween" group.

I was planning on buying my wife's brother a PS3 this year for X-Mas (he's 15) but for $200 I bet he'd love a 360 too.... and if I got him a PS3, it'd be for Games-only, at least for awhile I imagine..... (No HDTV) and although I may still possibly buy him a PS3, a $1,000 for a T.V., even if it does come with a PS3, is more than I'd be willing to spend on him (although I may get another T.V. for myself, and give him the PS3, but most consumers probably don't follow this mind-set)

Hi,

Don't want an xbox at any price, yuk.

Happy to have a PS3!

But,.. What effect will the $199 price have? ... This is really likely to turn the format war in favor of HD DUD. Those guys have been saying as soon as the player prices are down everyone's going HD DUD. (Oh wait... the DUD players can't be given away now and when you could find them they were under $100... nevermind.)

*takes foot out of mouth with the hdmi blunder*

The effect a 199$ xbox has is those people who have been waffling about getting an xbox for the exclusive xbox games that don't feel like waiting for it to come on a PC might pick one up. I've been looking hard at Fable 2 but couldn't justify paying 400$ for the elite, but with it being 200$ I will end up picking one up. There's also a couple of other games out there that are xbox exclusive from S-E worth picking up from what I keep hearing. Hopefully the system lasts long enough that I can finish the games, and when it eventually RRODs, I won't feel like I wasted too much money on a heap of junk.

You are making my point, if he doesn't have a HDTV to hook a 360 to, why even buy him one? Get him a Wii, the whole familly will enjoy it with him, and next year a PS3 to hook up to his brand new HDTV
