If there was no other option available I would agree with you but if you look around both the Paramount dvd of Martha Ivers and the MGM dvd of KCC can be obtained for reasonable prices, and IMHO overall they have better picture than the blus when upscaled.

I scored my Blu-rays of The Red House, Kansas City Confidential, and The Strange Love of Martha Ivers for roughly five dollars apiece. Instead of shelling out more for DVDs, I'd just as soon bide my time to see if better high definition incarnations of these movies come down the pipes. If that never happens, then I'll be alright.

Nice comment on Allene Roberts; I never knew that. I liked Union Station the best of the four films in Olive's film noir collection box set. Union Station is one of those noirs that doesn't come immediately to mind when I think about my favorites, but then later I remember it and realize it could easily find its way onto my list. Having William Holden as the star also helps. The film was released in 1950, the same year as Sunset Boulevard, thus it is a part of the amazing streak of films from Holden in the early to mid 1950s.

After my first viewing, I googled the director and discovered that Rudolph Maté is primarily known for his work as a cinematographer. Born in the Austrian-Hungarian Empire to Jewish parents, he was trained in the best traditions of German cinema, worked in the industry there, then emigrated after the coming of the Nazis. His career as a cinematographer in the U.S. includes Gilda, The Lady from Shanghai, Pride of the Yankees, Foreign Correspondent, Cover Girl, That Hamilton Woman, and many more. Toward the end of the 1940s he also began directing; among his best known films as director is D.O.A.

Since he was the cinematographer on several Rita Hayworth films that have become among her most well known, I feel I owe Rudolph a standing ovation as the man responsible for so many of her most iconic images.

Can someone please educate me on how to make the accent mark show up above the letter e when typing certain words in this forum where it doesn't happen automatically, as in the case of my post above for Mate? For words like café it happens automatically when I type.

Hold down the letter key for a second or two, and then a pop-up menu should show up with accent options you can choose.

I had regrets, the DVDs are so much better especially Martha Ivers and KCC, the black levels on the DVD are better, the blu rays just look washed out and ugly. Id rather own a superior DVD over a crappy blu ray full of DNR and poor black/white/greyscale levels

As an original art devotee, I admit I got sucked into buying the Blus for THE STRANGER, THE RED HOUSE, KANSAS CITY CONFIDENTIAL and MARTHA IVERS, but I've yet to watch any of them. I got them all for very cheap and still have the DVDs for all, plus the KINO Blu of THE STRANGER. I'm not quite sure what to do with the problematic Blus, but I sure do love looking at those covers.

Hunh. I just keep a Notepad file with various characters such as vowels with diacritical marks, foreign characters (Greek, Cyrillic, Icelandic, etc.), various foreign currency symbols, and so on. When I need one of them, I just cut and paste.

Thanks for sharing this.

I no longer have to copy and paste "Le Samouraï" from the Wikipedia page. Good news, since I tend to type that movie title at least once a week in this forum.

TodayI watched (featured on DVD Bad Girls of FilmNoir Vol 2)

Cleo Moore and Richard Crenna. I would consider it melodrama more than anything but I love drama so this one exceeded my expectations and wasn't at all like the poster would have you believe.

I never really noticed Cleo Moore but she was really great I this film and after looking up her credits which are slim. Overexposed was her next to last film before she retired. Cleo passed away in 1973 at age 48! I wish she could have had a longer career for sure.

I just bought that one sheet poster for $8!

I first saw this movie on the Late Late Show when I was a very, shall we say, impressionable teenager? And man did I have a thing for Cleo after that!

watched another Cleo Moore classic, One Girl's Confession (DVD)

This one was better than I expected and not as salacious as the poster would lead you to believe but I really enjoyed this one. Cleo Moore was great in this one.

Cleo also had a part in one of my favorite noirs-On Dangerous Ground. I'll echo the "too bad" sentiment regarding her career. She seemed to be just window dressing or starring in those trashy (but entertaining!) Hugo Haas films.

On Dangerous Ground is a fantastic film noir, and it's one of my favs. Ida Lupino and Robert Ryan make a great combo. More importantly, I love the non-metropolitan landscapes. (I love film noir movies that take place outside of cities.)

I wish some of her other films were at least on DVD. nothing for Hit and Run or The Other Woman. Maybe they are really bad.

I don't even think TCM shows them. The Hugo Haas films would seem like natural fits for their TCM Underground slot.

Lately, I've been getting my Noir fix from an unusual source-Season 1 of The Adventures of Superman. These episodes are so totally different in tone from what the later (Seasons 3-6) color episodes morphed into-namely, a kids program with cartoonish villains and an overall comedic atmosphere with only an occasional glimps of the serious tone that season 1 and parts of season 2 had. Season 1 especially is a serious, hard-hitting (literally!) crime drama with noir overtones and a genuine sense of danger from the bad guys. They don't hesitate to kill and the violence is pretty strong for an early '50s TV show. Lois Lane really gets manhandled in this season but Phyllis Coates gives as well as she takes and I definitely prefer her characterization of Lois to Noel Neill's.
Anyway, I recently saw this season, at Walmart for $9.96, which I think is a steal

Watched Bad For Each Other (DVD) with Charlton Heston, Lizabeth Scott.

I'm finding that a lot of these more dramas then boots get somewhat preachy like a Sunday school lesson. I liked most of the film and it was never dull at least. lots of Ethics questions being brought up but none of this would fly even on TV but I loved the scene after a major surgery doctors go to very next room and light up some smokes

I really love Lizabeth Scott's movies. Pitfall, The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, Dark City, Dead Reckoning, etc.

I might have to get started on these Bad Girls of Noir sets soon.
