Exclamation WHEEL OF TIME series to be adapted

Universal has bought the rights to adapt Robert Jordan's bestselling "Wheel of Time" series:

Adaptations of the fantasy tomes will begin with the first book in the cycle, "The Eye of the World."

Rick Selvage and Larry Mondragon will produce for Red Eagle Entertainment, which published graphic novel adaptations of Jordan's books.

"The Wheel of Time" follows, among its dozens of characters, Rand al’Thor, the latest incarnation of a force for good called "The Dragon." Rand is born to fight an evil character called Shai’tan.

"Wheel of Time" books have sold 44 million copies worldwide and spawned computer, trading-card and role-playing games; a soundtrack; comicbooks; and numerous fan sites. The four most recent installments have reached No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list.

Jordan died last year at 58, but the final book in the series is still set for publication in fall 2009, with fellow fantasy scribe Brandon Sanderson writing the novel’s conclusion from Jordan’s notes and tapes.

I loved this series. It should have only been 5-6 books long, but I'm anxiously waiting to see if the new author can wrap up all the dozens or so loose ends. I'm a bit amblivent about an adaptation of the series, since very few fantasy movies have been done correct.

Has it been announced what exactly they are adapting to?

For example: TV Series/Mini-series/Movies/etc

it won't matter...they will probably try to squeeze it into one, maybe two..and completely ruin it....happens all of the time.

Well for the Sword of Truth series, ABC is releasing it in a mini-series form which should work out nicely coming out November 1st. They are calling it Legend of the Seeker though.

I've read the entire series of WoT (except last book of course) and I cannot even begin to imagine them fitting each book into 1, 3 hour movie. Correct me if I'm wrong, but some of the books are over 1000 pages.

you're not...

but, you can really get rid of a lot of the hodge-podge stuff in the last couple...you can tell Brooks was losing some of his editing skills in the end, which, is truly sad.....the first couple were really good..up until about Lord of Chaos...then they just started dragging...

they would be good as a mini-series on HBO, NOT SCI-FI!!!

I found that to be the case by the end of the second one. . which was the last one I read. If I remember correctly .. it almost felt like he was trying to make it seem epic .. by simply pumping up the word count.

Ive loved each and every book of the WoT series. I can see why some wouldnt, but for me its the kind of series ive always wanted. I love reading about everything that happenes whether or not its some exciting battle or just whats gong on while hanging out. These books arent just about the major events that happened, they are about the people and everything going on in this world.

Although the adaptation will probably be terrible though. tear

OMG i love the the wheel of time so it's hard to believe it will be a friggin' movie! honestly i haven't read passed book five, lord of chaos mostly because of time restraints (life gets in the way). it might take two three hour movies to complete eye of the world alone! i hope they get a damn talented and very dedicated director!

I thought that the last book Knife of Dreams was the best one since Lord of Chaos. The pacing picked up and the story seemed to be moving forward. There were still new characters being introduced which was crazy being it was suppose to be the second to last book and there is already a cast of 100 characters.

Gamma626: It is an excellent series through Lord of Chaos, but then Jordan starts to meander with his story telling. Kind of like the 3rd (?) season of LOST. Alot of stuff seems to be happening, but the plot doesn't go anywhere and nothing gets resolved.

I would recommend this series in a heartbeat as its one of my favorites of all time. Just prepare yourself for a lot of long reads. They are not short books by any means.

I like long reads. Is the print small though? I'm not good with small print.

Depends if you get it in hardback or paperback. I know the print is larger in the hardback editions.

I would highly recommend this series to most Scifi/Fan readers. It really has some of the best character development written. I would also highly recommend "The Song of Fire and Ice" series written by George R. R. Martin. It begins with "A Game of Thrones", and is also a great series. SoF&I is very graphic in nature though, and the situations are much more adult then WoT.

Both series are incredible, both are not yet finished. That is the only Caveat I have about them. I have been waiting with baited breath for almost 20 years for Wheel of Time to wrap. I feel GRRM might have similar issues as well. You have been warned!

So, at least someone that is familiar with adapting the books will do the movies, but I am rather fearful of the "graphic novel"/comic book idea, I hope it doesn't turn into something along the lines of such movies, not that comic book movies are bad by any means.

And I JUST saw this, was hoping to be first to post... oh well. Brandon Sanderson briefly talks about it in his blog. I've been keeping track of his page for the updates as to how far he is in the writing of the final book. 44% through the first draft....
