Now without trying to be too nit-picky or dissect words too much, it sounds to me like he DID have a younger audience in mind when he made Star Wars.
I think people also have to have an idea of what a "kid" was in 1977. Lucas was really talking about anyone under 20ish. Now when people talk about "kids" they mean pre-tween (ie: 11 or 12 and under). So while Lucas was certainly looking at making a movie for (forgive the term) "all ages" of kids, meaning a 5 year old could watch it and like it but also a 17 year old.

Now "kids" stuff is aimed much younger.

Yeah, I think when he was talking about it in Empire of Dreams, he said he wanted to make a film for young people, not specifically kids.

IMO, all action and Sci-Fi movies are for kids, including Mad Max, Terminator, Alien, etc. It really doesn't matter that they're R rated. Toys R Us still sells toys for most of them. I know exactly what I wanted to watch as a kid and what my peers wanted to watch and what kids want to watch today. These are all kids movies, including Star Wars. So there.

It'c clear in general that this new canon owes a lot to the prequels, with Rebels, Tarkin, and Lords of the Sith playing a huge part and they all have ties to the prequels. They're never going to just be ignored, and even Abrams really can't at the end. You'd alienate a whole section of fans who grew up on those movies, which wouldn't be right. It comes down to taking the good from the bad, and making it all work as best as possible to please fans on both sides.
I don't know how you could logically work in very many ties to the prequels. Remember that unless something has been revealed to Luke or Leia in the years after Episode VI, like a secret file that the Jedi kept, Luke doesn't really know anything about his father. And with Vader, Obi-Wan and Yoda gone (Force Ghosts aside), there's no one to tell him about his family's early history. Maybe Luke can say something like, "a master always takes an apprentice - there's always two" or talk about the power of the dark side, but that's about it.

When promoting STRANGE MAGIC, Lucas told the CBS Morning Show that he made Star Wars for 12 year old boys, and with Strange Magic, he wanted to do the same for young girls.

All manner of historical references - from Viet Nam to the Crusades - could make perfect sense in a story about the current War on Terror. Constant references? Perhaps not. But some references wouldn't be at all out of place.

Are there really any 'uniquely prequel' elements that are truly indispensable when telling a Star Wars story?

For that matter, are there really all that many 'uniquely prequel' elements to begin with?

Midiochlorians, Anakin's virgin birth and the Chosen One prophecy come to mind but none of them seem particularly difficult to ignore moving forward.

There won't be any references to the prequels. JJ Abrams has openly said many things that indicated he hated the prequels. Plus I don't think he is brave enough to make the fans angry after what happened to the prequels, he will only do what he know will please the fans.

There could be some innocuous nods. Some reference to the Jedi Temple or archives would be harmless enough, for instance. Qui-gon showing up would probably be way too on the nose in fan-servicey sort of way but Qui-gon himself probably wouldn't annoy or anger too many fans.

I'd like to see Coruscant, if not in Episode VII at least in VIII or IX. I feel like it's too important a planet to just ignore completely from here on out.

Also, if the rumors about the ancient Sith master being
[Show spoiler]Darth Plagueis
are true, then that's
[Show spoiler]at least one way this trilogy ties back to the PT.

That's not a giraffe, I think it's some type of gazelle.

I still would love to see Ric Olie return but I suppose he would be dead by Force Awakens.

Rey is rumored to
[Show spoiler]become a jedi in this trilogy right? If so, it's very possible that she could be using a double-bladed lightsaber.

You mean you have nothing to back up with, because I haven't seen Abrams say what you claim. Ever.
