Either way, you need an ascended exotic, 1 of varicks armour pieces and then 2 etheric lights to ascend your remaining armour slots.

Etheric light you get from PoE 34 and 35. So most you can get is 2 per week per character.

That will boost your current legendary gear from light lvl 36 to 42.

Or you could do it the slow way and just wait for weekly reset and just keep picking up varicks armour until your done.

For my Titan I ascended my Exotic helmet and got the gloves from varicks week one and then did 34 and 35 PoE to get 2 etheric light to boost my chest piece and legs to hit 34.

You can also get Light from ToO silver, gold and flawless packages. If you have spare armor and weapon cores you can gamble on a judgement package and hope you get armor piece (those already start at 42 light).
