in gymnastics having a smaller, younger, more agile body is an advantage, so having a 12 year old against a 16 year old, there is actually an advantage to the 12 year old.

I think they made a min. age for this competition, because certain countries were hauling off girls at like the age of 2, training them for a decade and throwing them in the Olympics. The girls basically lost their childhood for "national pride".
