Online Nintendo Gaming Question

Good evening all,

My last Nintendo unit was a DSi several years back, I know they have had some extensive upgrades since then. A very good friend of mine is moving away soon and her birthday is coming up. I'd like to buy us both a set of 3DS XL's and a few games to play while she is away. My first question is, how is the 3DS at playing co-op or vs. (depending on the game) from long distances rather than playing local?

My next question is more specific and geared towards specific games. I am looking into the newest Pokemon games (OR & AS), New Super Mario Bros 2 (maybe 3D land, unsure), Mario Kart 7, Super Smash Bros, and either Lego Marvel and/or Lego Batman 2. How are each of these games in terms of multiplayer? Is there one that I listed above that does not have that option?

Which do yall recommend, New Super Mario Bros 2 or Super Mario 3D Land? Lego Marvel or Lego Batman 2? We both like our options in characters and a nice open map. Open to all suggestions!

Sorry for the immense amount of question! Just want to make sure I'm buying the right items
