I had the same problem as the OP, and I considered alphabetical. But instead, I labeled the rows and columns of my shelves and then asked people on Facebook to post random things and let that determine what I watched (and I posted the result for them to make it interactive).

For example, once I labeled the rows as A, B, C, etc. Columns the same. Then each column fits about 30 movies. So... "Comment with the name of your favorite celebrity". Take their initials to pick the row & column and their birthday to pick the film. If the initials or number exceed your row/column/movie count then wrap around til you get there. If you only want to watch unwatched, then skip the watched ones while counting.

It actually yielded some pretty coincidental results, with movies that often had some relation to the celebrity they had typed.

I've also coded up a random generator for this same purpose before.

One of these days, when I'm an old man, and I'm retired from work without a care in the entire world, I'm going to watch my Blu-rays and DVDs in biographical order.

I'm dead serious.

I'm going to start with the first movies that I remember seeing at an extremely young age. (Benji, Jaws, Star Wars, Goldfinger, etc.)

I will then work my way up to the movies that I discovered later on during my childhood. (Planet of the Apes, The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Superman II, etc.)

From there, I'll go through my teenage years, my college years, my early adult years, and so on.

I'll begin by putting my Blu-rays in the order that I discovered each movie during my life. This is different from the production date, mind you, because there were a lot of movies that I discovered decades after the fact (Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, etc.), but I will be watching them in the order that I first discovered them during my lifetime, so that the viewings will be like going through a big memory reel of my own life.

Biographical order, did you get that from High Fidelity?

Lately I've just been solving the blind buy problem by only watching blind buys, weeding out the ones I don't want to keep. In a couple of months I want my collection to only contain films I've seen and have deemed to be "keepers".

I've considered alphabetical order and chronological order before, but I'm young and still exploring and discovering cinema. I've seen a LOT of movies in my lifetime already, and there's still a ton more to devour. I'd like to continue that, but also get back to my favorites that I've neglected over the past year and a half (maybe more for some of them) while doing this. I may do one or both of these eventually when I feel like there's not much left on my so-called movie bucket list. That could be 10 years from now, lol.
