I dismissed that fan art, which wasn't horrible, and went right to the source.
I will type clearer next time.

Harrison Ford looks like his face is melting off his skull in that fan poster.

Overall, it's well done, but the actor likenesses are absolutely terrible.

I think we saw that poster a few months back, Chewie is a cut and paste from his Empire days by the look of it. The droids too.

Well that sucks. Was hoping to read the novel before seeing the movie like all the others. Plus, it's coming out a few weeks later for the book version? I won't even bother to make a purchase now.

And for the record I like Struzan, I just feel that he's overrated for being a human version of Photoshop. I thought the original OT posters (from 1977/1980/1983) were much better being completely original works of art and not a painted compilation of publicity shots like the SE and most of Struzan's poster art.
He, like the entire film industry, got lazy by the late 90's. However, his "lazy" (like John Williams') is light years ahead of everyone else's exceptional.

Struzan got tired of the increasing interference with his work (digital tech making it so much easier for some hip young marketing exec to **** with the image in photoshop) so it's no wonder his output diminished in terms of quantity and quality. In of the books about him he recounts the story of his journey with the Star Wars franchise, back when Lucas was this eager, hands-on guy in the early days which changed to not even meeting with him for Ep III and sending some flunkies instead. When Struzan saw what they did with his Ep III poster that was the final straw, and he basically swore off of movies after that IIRC.

I'm curious, what happened with that?

The marketing people altered his poster in computer after he's done with it.

They were not allowed to make their own photoshop poster so they **** with Struzan's (this part I'm just joking don't believe it lol).

Agreed, the original composition wasn't some amazing masterpiece, but the point was that it still got messed with and that was the straw that broke the camel's back.

I think they'd got to point where they thought they could fix anything digitally and they forgot to respect the original artist's chain in the process.

Perhaps it's a Raiders Ark opening scene nod? I don't really see it that way, but that's the beauty of art being subjective and not objective.

Dude, a bad drawing is a bad drawing. Enough with this mellow middle "everybody's happy" crap.

"Dude", an opinion is an opinion. Sorry to inform you of this.
Are you here to tell me what art I should and shouldn't like? That's a hoot!

Which, is some eerie way is quite descriptive of George Lucas' approach to film making in 1998/99 and onward.

I specifically remember a segment from the docs on how TPM was made, where he points out how digital editing made it easy for him to basically re-shoot the film in the editing room by removing/inserting characters into shots digitally with relative easy, change backgrounds, compositions etc.

Basically, he no longer needed to take great care and be 100% 'on target' as the director when on set shooting the film, because all the flaws/mistakes/whatever could just be edited out/in or changed later in post.

I'm saying maybe you should consider installing a barometer into your sense of taste and not be so fixated on liking everything in the world on equal footing just so everybody sees you as a mellow and cool guy.

Thankfully most directors use that sort of 'cut and paste' style editing to make their stuff better (Fincher is a prime example, he's the king of the digital tinkerers), and don't use it as a crutch to get away with not putting 100% into it the first time.

Lucas always was an editor at heart, so when all these digital post-production tools came along he was like a hog in a waller. The prequels were made in the editing room, not in the script or on the sound stage, and they suffered big time for it IMO.

So, basically: all you SW figure collectors who thought to yourselves that with all the new stuff coming out, at least you don't have to re-buy the classic droids.... suckers!
