Never even heard of this film or the director, but I'm willing to give it a shot. Good to know Criterion sometimes still releases obscure stuff that probably doesn't have a huge moneymaking potential.

Bruce Beresford is not a small time director...

He is the director of Oscar winning actors including Robert Duvall and Jessica Tandy and many great films such as Driving Miss Daisy and Tender Mercies...

This will get bought because it is a great movie...too bad it isn't coming out as a 3 Pack with Don's Party.

Sure he is. How often do you hear his name mentioned in best of lists? How many classic films has he made? He has made some Australian 'classics' perhaps, but they don't compare to the classics of American and European cinema surely.

He is not a very good director.
D mrs. daisy is not very god at all .

he does not deserve to have any films in the Criterion collection IMO and this release is a terrible Criterion release with a tiny unworthy film and hardly no supplements.
Criterion is really starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel now by putting out films that would better belong in a mill creek multi pack found in the Wal mart dump bin.

I believe this film might be in the Public Domain, as I remember seeing plenty of bargain basement releases of it on home video.

DVD talk review of the Criterion Blu-ray release of Mister johnson ; giving the total package an overall rent it ONLY rating and a 1 star out of 5 stars replay rating LOL

"Mister Johnson is director Bruce Beresford's lovingly crafted, curiously flat drama of clashing ideals in Colonialist Africa. Criterion's edition will probably help get this passion project the appreciative audience it didn't get in 1990, although I can't see too many people enjoying this vaguely-done film more than once. If only for actor Maynard Eziashi's vitality in the title role, rent it."

what movies do you think Criterion should release? or better question - what films would you like for them to release?

for a start they need to do a proper spike lee box set of Universal titles (jungle fever, crooklyn, clockers, mo better blues , etc. ) , A Life Less ordinary, more Lynch (elephant man, lost Highway, Wild at heart etc) , some more Ozu, Tree of Life, some Cimino, etc. No shortage of stuff. there are far better titles being put out by inferior companies and its pretty sad.

Oh and we desperately need Criterion editions of Midnight Run and The insider.

kudos to you for an enthusiastic and confident reply. I wasn't expecting that.

there actually is a 'shortage' of stuff from Cimino as there's his first 3 films and pretty much nothing else. those first 3 films are out already on blu from TT, Universal, and Criterion.

I wouldn't hold your breath for a Spike Lee box set. I could be wrong, but I don't think the consensus is that those films are as important or good as you seem to feel they are.

We also got 1 new Lynch this year and 1 new Lynch last year, so his fans aren't really being cheated.

The only thing I can really take exception to is A Life Less Ordinary.. I mean, c'mon... really? That movie is awful. Not just a flop w/ critics (39% RT,) but w/ the popular vote, too (6.4 IMDB).

That's where I first saw it, on some cheapie DVD release that I rented when I was checking out some non-Bond Brosnan films sometime in the 90s. It was not a bad little film but had no real replay value for me. I'm getting the impression that this one was tossed in as a freebie to Criterion at the same time they acquired Breaker Morant.

This is the first time I've ever heard Midnight Run mentioned as a Criterion-worthy title, but I'd definitely be on board! It's an underrated classic IMO.

(I'm half-expecting chris_sc77 to reply and say he meant Midnight Express.)
