From the Coen Brothers, this is not their best attempt at Noir...

Blood Simple is that film....As far as Neo-Noir, I would rank it very close to the top!

I'm also loving this class! I've already learned quite a bit about film noir and watched M (the German Blu-ray), The Letter, and Murder, My Sweet. Can't wait to see The Big Sleep this Friday
Oh, thank goodness. I was scared for a minute, because I'm a little bit behind (and I started about a week after it started).

Blood Simple is incredible, no doubt about that. I watched it with as little background info as possible and it's now one of my favorite noir/neo-noir films. I haven't seen The Man Who Wasn't There, but it's already in my "must buy" list

Anyone here seen the Chinese movie Black Coal, Thin Ice (2014)? I just came across it, but from what I've read and seen it sounds like a great and stylish neo-noir film. Unfortunately there are no BD releases available with English subs.

Apparently this trailer doesn't do the film justice, but it's the only one with English subs I could find

Variety Review (intro quoted below)

Quote:
Film Review: ‘Black Coal, Thin Ice’

A dissolute former detective, a trail of dismembered human remains, and a widow with a dark secret set the stage for a bleak but powerful Chinese film noir.

Scott Foundas
Chief Film Critic @foundasonfilm

The spirits of Raymond Chandler and James M. Cain course through “Black Coal, Thin Ice,” a bleak but powerful, carefully controlled detective thriller in which — as with all the best noirs — there are no real heroes or villains, only various states of compromise. A most curious hybrid of genre movie and art film, drenched in neon and wintry industrial bleakness, this third feature by the gifted mainland Chinese director Diao Yinan reps a significant advance in scale and craftsmanship over his festival favorites “Uniform” (2003) and “Night Train” (2007), with the potential to penetrate modestly further into the commercial sector....

I saw that film in the cinema a couple of months ago and, although I wouldn't have necessarily described it as a neo-noir, I can definitely see why you'd describe it that way.

It's a rather slow-moving film (not meant in a negative way) that has a very interesting look that could definitely classify it as noir in my eyes. I remember some interesting bright yellow and red neon light in some night scenes. Apart from the color aspect, there are also some very stunning shots from a technical point of view (i.e. where is the camera, how does it move in that scene, etc.). One scene that I particularly remember features a 360° shot which involves a small leap forward within the plot while the camera is going round. Very beautifully done. The scene is what opens the trailer you posted above. It's the one where the camera can be seen exiting the tunnel into the snow-covered street.

The American title "Black Coal, Thin Ice" definitely catches the spirit of the film but the more literal German title, which would translate to "Fireworks in broad daylight", also does the film justice but it's definitely more "mysterious" story-wise.

Thanks very much Hatman! I just found out there's going to be a DVD release of it in the UK on July 6th. Wish StudioCanal would put out a BD too, as the film looks like a visual treat (especially what you've said about it), but I may still just opt for the DVD just to check it out.

I think the movie definitely benefits from a Blu-ray experience - or watching it on the big screen for that matter - but unfortunately the German Blu-ray won't help you unless you speak Mandarin or understand German well enough to follow the subtitles or the dub.

My German disc info source says that there are no English subtitles on the disc.

Yes, it's in the A-Z list. It won't show up with a thumbnail on the main page until the cover art is published and added to the database here.

It appears to be the booklet, but they do say a poster is included too, so it may just be that image as well.

I just got the one for Daily Dose #12, though I did get three yesterday for Daily Dose #11 and I have no idea why.

They sent you mine! I just checked my inbox and I haven't received a Daily Dose email since Monday, the last one I have is Daily Dose #9. Not sure why they stopped, I didn't change any of the Canvas communication/email preferences.

Weird. Just in case you didn't know, they are available at the Canvas site under the announcements tab.

My participation in that course has been weak. I've taken the exams, gone through the Daily Dose emails, and watched a couple of noir movies from my collection just for the fun of getting back into them, but I haven't joined the TCM message board, and I haven't followed on Twitter. I wonder if I can get through the class just by taking the exams...if not, then I guess it wasn't meant to be this time around.

I'm in the process of buying a home, so my attention and priorities are yanked around, especially on weekdays, and, when I had free time this past weekend, I devoted it to "drive-in" movies where I didn't really have to use my brain.
