Some Rumors regarding NX and Retro Studios

The Diddy Kong Racing 2 project was moved over to new hardware that will be launched in 2016. The new platform is aiming for a price of $149.99 to avoid competing directly (price wise) with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The company fears that it would be market suicide to release another overly expensive box in the middle of a console generation, when most consumers have already invested in a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Wii U development kits are being used to develop NX software; the NX hardware is technically a Wii U except with higher memory bandwidth and a more balanced CPU.

For the skeptics who still don’t believe that Diddy Kong Racing 2 is coming:

Two weeks ago, Nintendo confirmed that Retro Studios isn’t working on a Metroid Prime title.

Nintendo applied for a trademark for “Diddy Kong” in Europe a few weeks ago.

Satoru Iwata teased at Diddy Kong Racing 2 when he held up a bunch of bananas at the E3 Digital Event.

Interesting. I never saw them releasing a machine that would exceed PS4/One in raw power simply because they're so far out of cadence with them. Meet? Sure. So that seems realistic. If they're claiming a "tweak" to the WiiU then it will still be PPC and nobody will want to make ports (just like now). So that worries me. Great for backwards compatibility though.

Lol it's Nintendo. They dictate what console gen is out, not Sony or MS. Granted they have the power to release when ever the hell they feel like it & that when they do, that's the new console gen folks.

Just because they're not doesn't mean somebody else isn't.

N64 was more powerful than PS1 and the same can be said for NGC Vs. PS2, but at the same time, they were inferior too.

Nintendo has lost most of the gamers and only some stayed as they're fans of the company's work because really, there's just no reason to stick to a company that makes a piss poor console with no 3rd party support.

It only took SIX MONTHS for Nintendo to finally release a good game for the Wii U. This right here is an accomplishment for Wii U owners.

EDIT: There was Splatoon before but meh.. Still very incomplete and needs to receive a lot of content to make it more playable.

Hope this isn't true. I don't want the NX to be the Wii U in a new shell. I'm not expecting a power house that beats PS4/X1 but something that looks a lot better than the Wii U (not that the Wii U looks like crap or anything).

Eh. You don't want the WiiU in the sense that you don't want a console with a tablet albatross and no 3rd party support. I speak for myself but it probably represents most peoples thoughts but I'm perfectly fine with the WiiU graphics. I have a PC for the ultra real stuff. Sometimes I just want to sit back and play games the way they used to be (i.e. not real). For me it's good enough just to see Nintendo properties in 1080 and a rock solid frame rate. Their games have a simpler style but at the same time still look damned good. Nobody can say Mario Kart looks bad. More CPU and Ram will make the entire experience a lot smoother (hello responsive OS). Also with a lower price point you have the chance to sell millions more systems which in turn lures developers. Just keep the Wii branding off it.

The Wii U was meant to be as a much of a big success as the Wii was, and as such, Nintendo only made the Wii U's design a larger Wii. So much for a cool console design. lol

I agree with what you said but about Mario Kart 8, if you focus on the backgrounds you'll notice that the graphics/artwork isn't very good. Just take this for example.

Eh. Whizzing around at 200cc, I don't have time to look. Besides, all current gen racing games still have not great crowds.

I agree, who has time to look for these "kinda" flaws in the game when the intent is never there to look at them for gameplay reasons.

I love the look of the console. Think it looks cool and I also think the graphics can look amazing. Especially Smash, Mario 3D and Yoshi. Tablet can work at times but I would like a more traditional console. Set top box and a controller.

I was just saying I would like the NX to be a more powerful in terms to the Wii U. More HDD space, better parts etc. A nice upgrade from switching consoles.

I think we all want that from Nintendo but they are far from "traditional" & will gamble if they like something new or never used before with gaming.

I doubt they care about competition with Xbox or PS mainly because if you throw all 3 camps in a room together, Nintendo walks out laughing because they have more family friendly games then both of the competition. Well more successful games anyway.

If you ever held the Wii U Pro Controller in your hand, you'd think this is an entirely different company. That's as close as they have yet to come to traditional consoles & most of the time, they ignore that controller in favor of the Gamepad.

They do make fun games & personally I'd rather they only support DS from now on & act as a third party distributor just like what SEGA did after Dreamcast.

The d-pad is slightly squishy but otherwise the Pro controller feels so right in my hands and it keeps a charge forever.

The graphics on Mario 3D Land 2, ahem, I mean Mario 3D World are glossy and somewhat cartoony so it hides whatever flaws that would be displayed. The camera friggin' sucks in this game.

It seems relatively likely that the Nintendo NX will launch sometime later next year. DigiTimes is reporting that Nintendo is currently requesting that its supply chain partners start pilot production of components for the device in October 2015 at the earliest. The Kyoto based company is apparently looking to release the device in July 2016. The publication also reports that Nintendo is reportedly looking to ship 20 million NX consoles in the first year.

There are some inaccuracies in the story which should raise a note of caution, however. It claims that Nintendo has already announced a 2016 release date for NX.

It also states that Nintendo hopes to ship 20m NX consoles in its first year – a staggering number considering PS4 sold 22.3m units in its first 17 months. Wii U has, in contrast, sold just under 10m units in two and a half years.

MCV does understand, though, that the NX WAS demoed to a number of Nintendo's partners at E3 last month.

This console more than any other is a make or break for them. If they can hit that low price point, stay away from gimmicky crap, have backwards compatibility with GC, Wii and Wii U, have your e-shop purchases transfer over and have some of their big names on day one or the first year they have a chance. They absolutely cannot have a weak launch lineup. A remastered Zelda, a new Mario and 1 other big name at launch and they could sell a couple million easy. Get the install base laid out and the 3rd parties will come. Wii U graphics or slightly better is fine with me. Imagine a system that's slightly improved over the Wii U with no tablet overhead and a snappy UI. Sell the tablets separate for backwards compatibility and keep the resources free for NX games. I'd buy it for sure.

Maybe Nintendo will actually be the first to go all digital, they like to lead trends rather than follow them after all. What if NX is a cloud based platform?

Would be very ballsy of Nintendo, but if anyone had the balls to try it then it's Ninty.
