I don't think its possible to make the 40GB play PS2 games, it doesn't have the PS2 GPU and CPU.

The 60GB and 20GB had both and the 80GB (MGS bundle) only has the CPU and not the GPU so BC is software emulated rather than hardware emulated.

The 40GB has none, so i don't think its possible via firmware.
