Default Help me help a friend with his surround sound issue....

Friend of mine online is having some issues with his PS3. He's using optical and he's not even getting DD 5.1 from Blu-ray's. Here's what he said....

Quote:
So my problem is that I put in Pirates of the Caribbean and I get no voices. I get all the sound effects and all that crap, but when they speak... nothing. So I decided to play with the audio settings on the PS3 a bit. I can get the voices to come out, but I have to choose "bitstream" as my output on the PS3. Problem is, when I choose bitstream now I lose my surround sound and everything comes out of the front 2 speakers. I have tried changing the audio track in the BR movie itself (from DD5.1 to DD 5.1 uncompressed) but that made little difference.
What's his solution to just get DD 5.1 working from it? I can't remember.

Ask him to press the select button to see what is playing. He might need to force DD only through optical.

You got the bitstream right for optical, but when you goto bitstream you want to check the audio settings on your RECEIVER to output the signal as 5.1 etc... if your receiver doesn't automatically detect it for you.

more info on the type of receiver is also helpful.

First, sound through optical. Then Bitstream. Then choose DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1, as well as LPCM 2.0 at 96.4kHz. That's on the PS3. When playing back BDs, always choose DD or DTS 5.1.

On the Receiver, it has to be set to optical.

This might be too obvious but I will ask it anyway. Is he connecting his PS3 *DIRECTLY* to his receiver via optical? Or through the TV first? If he is connecting through his TV and then from his TV to his surround system, that is the problem.
