No, not really. The original poster art of THUNDERBALL is good, but it's been reversed and it's too small. The art on FRWL looks kind of amateurish.
There have been so many great Bond film posters from around the world over the decades, there is no reason to EVER have a bad cover for any Bond release. |

If you are familiar both of these series' that were sold in the UK between 1987 and 1991/2, you will note that the artwork picture/collage for the first 3 films is not borrowed from the theatrical poster. I love them! However, I note that your referred to From Russia With Love as looking amateurish. I just feel that it's only in keeping with how the others look with their theatrical posters. Those 3 images were the work of an artist, who was hired by Warner Home Video in Europe. |

The thing that bothers me the most is the sound on MOONRAKER. On the Ultimate black box DVD set the sound is incredible - as it was on the Laserdisc.
On the BD it's been altered with little or no surround information and a much decreased LFE. Even the 2.0 Dolby Surround is not correct. It's merely the new 5.1 downmixed - not at all like the previous 2.0 mixes in various formats. It's very disappointing. |

They fixed it for the blu-ray.
On the UE DVD, TB had a new 5.1 mix that added entirely new foley sounds. It's most notable when Largo is opening the door to the SPECTRE meeting with a remote, the sound effects for the door are entirely new. Luckily, the mono mix was not a downmix of that, but more true to the way the film originally sounded in mono. When the blu-ray was released, they didn't use the 2006 5.1 mix but instead used the mix that was made for laserdisc, and as far as I can tell the mono is pretty much the same. |

Most people like new remixes, but if the movie was originally in mono, then there's no reason that track shouldn't be included, it's quite often the superior version. |

(see the Terminator Bluray in which the 5.1 mix has no relation to the original audio. Music instruments and melodies missing, SFX altered. Another example is the E.T. Bluray. The 5.1 mix has a completely new dialogue (!!!) in the "hospital" scene compared to the original stero track) Also, see this video on Jaws: Now, I'm no expert on James Bond films, but again i would prefer the original audio, in case things changed substantially in the new mixes. For example, in OHMSS, my #3 favorite film ever (not just Bond, but all films), one of the key scenes, Bond breaking into Gumbold's safe, is scored with a lengthy cue by John Barry. 1969 taste had the music mixed REALLY loud, which I love. However 2004 (or whenever the new mix was done) taste had the music MUCH, MUCH quieter, with much noisier sound effects. This totally ruins the impact of the scene, for me. And there are many other instances like this, it's just the most egregious. I actually tried to ask Michael G. Wilson about this at a Bond event I went to once. I was as polite and none tech-geeky as possible, and I figured as the steward of the films, he'd care. However he couldn't have looked more bored with my question, and said technical stuff like that is all up to MGM. ![]() Last edited by James Luckard; 07-28-2015 at 06:53 PM. |
