Audyssey (or something as good)

I see that Onkyo stepped up their AccuEq but now their newest receivers aren't capable of running surround backs with the ceiling/height speakers. I'd probably get away with 7.1.2 but I'd like to go all out with 4 ceiling speakers.
Everything from Onkyo/Integra, Pioneer/Elite, Denon/Marantz and Yamaha that is 7+ channels will have X this year, period.

Nobody cares for THX...except Onkyo/Integra and Elite.

Audyssey is only Denon/Marantz.

Outside Denon/Marantz, nobody has a 9+ channel available yet(far as I know Yamaha hasn't released the 3050 to the wild).

Onkyo/Integra and Pioneer/Elite have yet to announce anything, at all, anywhere in the world, for 2015 that is 9 or 11 channels.

Since you want 11 channels, today...you have 3 choices. Denon 5200/7200 or the Marantz 8802.

Edit:

The 3050 is available. So you have 4 choices.

Yamaha 3050, no THX or Audyssey.
Denon/Marantz 5200/7200/8802, no THX.

Yeah I'm hoping more receivers get announced with the features I want. I personally like the THX sound modes so that's why I want it. Though I don't know if the new Dolby processor would basically eliminate the need for THX for me.

THX still certifies the components after testing.

I am in the same boat too,I do want to get a new amp with "Dolby Atmos" now,but at the same time would be pretty annoyed if a manufacturer then brought out a product with "Dts X" as well, and just like you I do not see the point in all the extra outlay and of course installation, without the minimum of 7.4.1 specification.

THX Ultra is pretty much a must for me too,I do think that Onkyo will be bringing out a receiver that will meet our needs at some point, they do seem to be sticking with the THX licence, while other manufacturers have dropped it.

Also I have just been so happy with my Onkyo TX-SR875 receiver that I don't want to leave the brand,so I guess I am playing the waiting game.

Another very good reason to sit tight,at Blu-ray's inception it seemed that "Dolby Tru HD" would be pretty much the standard, but in the end of the day it was "Dts Master Audio" that the majority of Blu-ray's have as their lossless track.

Dts are promising much more flexibility with their object based surround format,so it could happen again,at the least it would be sensible to see how both installations work in a home enviroment, just so we do justice to both formats.

Except it's not as simple as losslessly compressing PCM masters. Atmos object audio isn't compatible with DTS X, and has to be redone. Why do you think previous DTS-only studios like Universal are putting out their theatrical Atmos films in Atmos on Blu-ray?

And the promised DTS X flexibility is bunk. All they're saying is that it's compatible with existing setups. Nothing special.

These two from Onkyo are the nearest to the specification I need, and I was wondering how easy it would be for them to receive "Dts X" via a firmware update in the future?,I know there are amps/receivers that are getting "Dolby Atmos" with future firmware updates.

Thanks for the info Peter,I used to sell AV kit but must must confess I have been out of the loop for ages now,do you think that the extra ceiling speaker placements will be pretty much the same for both formats?.

That's what DTS is saying. If you have already set up your speakers for Atmos...or Auro...their system will play through it without issue.

With that in mind I may put some extra cables in so I am ready,I may even get some nice ceiling speakers too.

That being said Dolby have done their best to work with most peoples speaker setups.
Thanks for the replies. I think ceiling speakers are the way to go. I need to replace the ceiling tiles in my media room. I'm removing them to run some CAT6 cable (and other things) so I may as well install speakers at the same time. The room is 31' x 15' and I'm using the back half of the room for theater. (I also plan to use the front 5' for a pantry as well, which will shrink the room a bit).

Those are both 2014. (out in the wild BEFORE DTS ever made a peep about "we will have object based sound...")

The only reason(and...I mentioned it LAST YEAR) Denon is ahead of the curve with the 5200/7200 is because of HOW LATE IN 2014 THEY WERE RELEASED(as in DTS already leaked "vapor" about X. So Onkyo already had everything out. Denon had the time to get the 5200/7200 ready, hardware wise, before they were ever released. The 5200/7200 can be considered pre-2015 to full year 2015. I doubt either gets replaced during the 2015 stretch...which ends this time in 2016)

Studios have to start making some product (bluray) news regarding DTS-X for the upcoming Holiday sales season soon (we're just hitting the half way mark through August) - or DTS will have very little to entice the public with. Sony's sudden support of Atmos helped Dolby considerably

You would think Sony would add Atmos to their AVR...

Oh, wait...even Sony couldn't care less about their audio...

I just realized the date today is the 17th. I was told the boat from Japan carrying my RX-A3050 would've hit the dock in Vancouver yesterday.
My AVR will be here in the coming week, but I'll be up at work.
I'm gonna be pretty psyched when I get back in early September!

Received and set up my RX-A3050 last Friday. Works perfectly in my 7.2.4 lay out. My only Atmos experience so far is with "John Wick". Stunning audio! Everyone should be aware that the Redbox Blu-Ray offering does NOT not include Atmos encoding on "Mockingjay Part 1", only a stripped down 5.1 track. It's my understanding that Lionsgate has made this choice (to save $$). It's worrisome that other movies will also suffer this fate on the rental market, depriving renters of Atmos (and, later, DTS:X?).

To make $$, rather, by forcing you to purchase the movie for the audio. You still have DSU though.
