Alice in the Cities - In a similar vein to Paris, Texas, in some ways a proto-version of that film. Some amazing images and the same sort of existential/wanderlust vibe. It's on Hulu Plus if that is available to you. Wrong Move - I didn't care for this one much, but will definitely see it again. Probably most notable for featuring Nastassja Kinski in one of her first roles (albeit a small one). Kings of the Road - I have not seen this one. I've thought of importing it, but with the possible Criterion release always in the back of my mind, I just haven't done it. Everything I've read puts it alongside Alice and his other top-tier works. (The above three are often referred to as a trilogy, although it's more thematic such as Kieslowski's Three Colors than Apu). The State of Things - I've not seen or read much about this one. Until the End of the World - A beautiful mess. Ambitious, creative, colorful, imaginative, meditative, but all in all a bit too sprawling and cumbersome to be considered great. I do love it, though. It's outwardly a sort of neo-noir set in the near future (though not in an overly sci-fi way -- it's a very "post-modern 1990s" version of the near future, like the brighter, sunnier decade before Blade Runner) that has a lot of subtext (as I see it) about "capturing the muse", and the ethereal quality of dreams, inspiration and ideas that we are always struggling to make tangible and bring to life. No doubt as a homage to his influences Wenders also employs a really interesting mixed cast of Europeans and Americans from multi-generations as well as a pretty great soundtrack. I don't hesitate to rank Alice up there with Paris, Texas and Wings of Desire, and I'd rate UTEOTW with The American Friend as flawed but compelling. I agree, The Apu Trilogy has seemed like a sure thing since last November's slate was announced, so let's hope. November is traditionally a big month with a little bit of everything.

(1) I haven't seen Alice In The Cities or Kings Of The Road. (2) I haven't seen the 295m cut of Until the End of the World. I have both the US cut (160m) and the extended cut (180m) on laserdisc, and like both versions, with a marked preference for the latter. (3) The State of Things is quite good, but it's a little bit out of left field. |

It's because I recently bought a copy. So OF COURSE Criterion will release a superior version just months later. ![]() |

One of the films in the Collection that I've wanted to see upgraded to blu-ray is Pabst's legendary Pandora's Box starring Louise Brooks. I just noticed that the old DVD is no longer available for sale on the Criterion website, although there is a note saying that it is "not OOP" and is still available at other retailers, including Amazon (where it's currently being offered by various third party sellers for between $76 and $300).
So what gives? Is it likely that Criterion is about to announce an upgrade on the title? Or is this just the first step in the title officially disappearing from the Collection? I thought perhaps someone with more experience than I might know the routine ... |

We just recorded our second podcast and discussed Wenders at length.
I've seen a number of them including the entire Road Trilogy. Kings of the Road is up there with the best that Wenders has done IMO. I can see how someone would dislike Wrong Move, and it's less accessible, but it has some fantastic tracking shots up these mountain roads that would look great on a restored scan. I like The American Fiend, but would not rate it anywhere near the trilogy. Have not seen Until the End of the World. |

EDIT: Actually, come to think of it, Pandora's Box might have been one of the very first Criterions I ever purchased. |
