Does the fact that JJ has been saying all along that the new film was going to have a boatload of CG undercut your scoop at all?

Furious Fan Boys? Ugh, I can't stand the idiot who writes the articles for that site. He comes across as one of the most sanctimonious Lucas-worshipers I've even seen in my life. There's a reason most people don't pay that website much attention.

Did he specifically say that thousands of shots would have CGI?

As opposed to the Lucas haters who grasp at straws and attempt to use any excuse to bash the man's life's. Quick to criticize, slow to understand and comprehend.

How would he had got that impression without the constant "practical" talk during the panels? They nary even mention CGI.
Ah, anecdotal evidence. Evidence of nothing. JJ Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy have always made it abundantly clear that there would be CGI and practical effects used in the film. They have been hyping up the practical effects because a lot of films do overly rely on it to the film's detriment. I don't care what tools they use so long as it looks great in the final product. Everything I have seen looks phenomenal, CGI or practical. Stop using hyperbole and trying to use a straw man argument to bash the film because, for whatever the reason, you feel offended that the filmmakers and many of the fans don't care for the prequels. The prequels will always be there for you to enjoy. Get over it.

No doubt they will. Critics are sheep and should never be trusted. The days of critics who actually knew what the hell they were talking about are long gone.

Why is it okay for a vocal minority to bash the Prequels for 16 years with the same tired illogical arguments, but when someone defends them using facts and common sense and intelligent dissection (such as The Ring Theory) they are castigated? Oh I forgot, this is the internet.

You keep forgetting this is the FORCE AWAKENS thread. I hope you get suspended soon. I am sick of checking this thread and seeing the same tired discussion. CGI, blah blah blah. Practical effects, blah blah blah. It's not fair, blah blah blah. I have no problem with people sharing different opinions, but you seriously keep derailing this thread with your off topic discussions and/or deliberate trolling.

I am talking about The Force Awakens. The only ones who don't seem to want to discuss the film are those who are getting butthurt that someone does not agree with them and continue to act childish. I mean really, if you don't want to actually discuss anything then don't post. The only thing most of you seem willing to do is insult.

Yeah, because people like David Thomson, A.O. Scott, J Hoberman ... they don't know what the hell they're talking about.

That's three...out of...what about 200 or so critics used on RT? So yeah, less 2% of all critics have deep knowledge and experience about film. The Kael's and Ebert's are gone and in their place looking for a cheap one-liner than any kind of meaningful analysis.

One, I wasn't going to post some vast list. Two, RT is BS. Three, the great majority of the critics I read don't reflect what you're talking about at all.

Maybe you need to read different criticism.

Is that what you're hanging your journalistic cap on? The distinction between 'thousands of' and 'an enormous amount of'?

Please. JJ didn't 'admit' anything at the D23 Expo that he hasn't been saying all along.

I thought we're done with this argument. While they did go too far with the CG sometimes (Clonetroopers, superimposed ground even though is usually done for reshoots only due to time constraints), the prequels used tons of practical effects, probably no less than The Force Awakens. Do I have to post the pictures again, I would love to because they're just beautiful.

The prequels have more that CGI look because of the alien worlds they're in. Geonosis, Utapau, Kamino, even Coruscant mainly shot with large model, but they used computer to give alien-look to the atmosphere or the sky that does not register with our definition of real. Our eyes have problems adjusting to it, we need to be able to connect to some reality.

Again JJ Abrams is smart to not use any alien world, all the planets we see so far have atmosphere and environments that exist on Earth. We can take it as real more easily. I have no big issues with that, but the way they're boasting it to be the "king of practical effects" is too much in my opinion. They're really selling the film with the nostalgia, I just hope we will be able to go past that and enjoy it as a brand new film without too much callbacks to the previous films or thinking "this is practical".

Now here's something practical:

PS: Even each of the planets in our own solar system is so unique, we have all kinds of weird environments out there. Then look at the the exoplanets that Kepler has found!

If the movie is good the 6 inch Black Series action figures are going to kill my wallet.

With the exception of the occasional bobble I've never really been interested in figures all that much. But lately some of the higher end stuff (the Sideshow Julie Newmar Catwoman, for instance) has caught my eye.

I really, really, really, really don't want to fall down that rabbit hole because just catching up would kill me, forget all the cool stuff to come.

Oh my god, that's gorgeous!

The only figures I have are a Supergirl one and a Wonder Woman one. I would get this, but yikes. $249!
