Default Hurricane Gustav

I hate living on the Gulf Coast. I hate the sound of every hurricane that hits the Gulf. I just built a decent home theatre system, so I fear everytime that one of these hurricanes is gonna come trash everything I own. Just pray for all of the people on the Gulf Coast. I dont want it to shift, I want it to miraculously die out. It could happen, I have faith in God.

Well, good luck in that faith. Category 3 hurricanes don't just die out.

Where do you live at?

Georgia is a wierd place. Everytime we have a hurricane about to hit here. It always seems to slightly turn north and miss us. Guess because the state curves inward and must be something out there to get it to turn north. Now coming up from Florida? Thats a different story.

Only a few days ago, they were only talking about Cat 1/2/3 for this thing. Now they are projecting Cat 4/5?! Talk about a monster growth! (Yes, I know it is because of the very warm waters in the Gulf, but daaayum)

I live up in Maine now. My father was a meteorilogical ( i might be spelling that wrong) scientist and he used to take me to storms and stuff, tornados, that sort of thing when he ran tests and stuff. It was pretty awesome to feel the power of these storms. Apparently im not allowed to say that though, as a mod has already threatened to ban me. What is wrong with that, i dont know.

Well....what you said could easily have been interpreted the wrong way. Now that you explained things a bit I see where your mindset was with what you said. So I can see why a mod would have acted severely to what you posted.

I cant, even if i had no experience with storms I dont see how thats a terrible thing. Some people like storms and such, thats why you get these nuts sometimes who travel to see tornados even when they have nothing to do with them! Its not like I wished death or destruction on anybody! I just happen to like storms.

Okay, I was trying to be informative and help you see that others could have taken offense to what you said - especially since there have been some extremely destructive hurricanes lately that have destroyed peoples entire lives.

BTW, I was not suggesting to the OP that I wanted his house or property damaged. Just in case someone was "offended" by my typed words, I wanted them to realize my comment wasnt directed toward the OP, it was more of a general statement.

Thats cool, i can understand that, but by the same token, cars have destroyed many lives as well right? So if you like cars, are you advocating you like them destroying others lives? Im not directing this toward you, just in general. See, that was kind of the statement I was making. I like storms and such, people also like cars, both can destroy or be kinda cool if in the right circumstance.

That's pretty cool. Did he drive one of these?

That's actually the second one I've seen. The other one looked even more like something from a Mad Max movie. I can't seem to find the pic now though. After sitting through plenty of 1's and 2's and a 3, can't say I'd be interested in a 4 or 5. I'd be one of the first ones out.

category 4, basically a 5. I really feel sorry for New Orleans.
Seriously though, what if it gets hit by a Cat 5 storm? Katrina was the strongest storm ever recorded( i think) but was only a cat 3 at landfall. A Cat 5 would destroy what ever is left. Do you rebuild or just abandon the city? Some will say rebuild but seriously, do you? 2 major hurricanes in 3 years. the city is below sea level.

Dont forget about Hanah out there, it still could strengthen and hit the US( not necessarily New Orleans)

I don't expect Hanah to be as powerful. Maybe around 80 to 90 mph. If it ges through Northern Florida then its going to go through New Orleans to. Would I go back? No.

I remember when Floyd threatened Savannah. If we got hit head on like they said the city would be under water since we're so far under sea level. Guess thats why we're called the low country. Most of the city is built on marsh land anyways

The biggest reason that it won't hit as a cat 4 or 5 is there is a layer of cold water along the coast line. That is why Katrina dropped from a 5 down to a 3 rapidly. Fay also dumped a lot of water recently that helped cool down the Gulf a little bit. Hopefully it will drop down to a 3 before it hits me. If not, well, I'll be posting from a new city in a week or two.

The general consensus of everybody I know is if it does the same thing as Katrina, that's it, there's no coming back. Most of it depends on where it hits, how bad it is, and if there is a repeat of the levee failures spawned by Katrina. If Jefferson Parish takes the brunt of it this time, I don't think New Orleans can recover from it.

Nature is taking back what's rightfully hers. It is sad to see so many displaced. Hopefully they heed the warning - again - and get out now.

The government has 17 points where they can pick people up, and they've already grabbed a bunch of people, something like 2100 people were evacuated on buses. So far they are listening!
