You can still get the unaltered version on DVD but is only on the second disc as a bonus so the quality isn't the best as it's taken from the laserdisc release.

What qualifies as a real fan though?

I sold the THX laserdiscs as they are also dreadful. I assumed as the LE unaltered version are from the laserdiscs, PQ would be identical. They both need zoom on the TV to get the right aspect ratio. I believe later BD players now do the non anamorphic to anamorphic so the TV does not need to do it.

Not that I know of.
If you play a non anamorphic dvd on a Bluray player you'll either get borders on all 4 sides or the image will be stretched if that's how you've set it to display 4:3 content which is what non anamorphic discs are.
But it wouldn't matter anyway whether the player or the tv did the work. Either way the image needs zooming if you want to keep proportions correct so the quality is lacking.

Some of the new Panasonic and SONY players detect the non-anamorphic image and display it without the window-boxing, they even move the subtitles if they're not burnt-in. Reported results are impressive. Most impressive ...

My non anamorphics DVD go all the way from the left to right size and just big top and bottom borders. The 4:3 letterbox zoom or whatever it is called now stretches it vertically to the right shape.

I must try it in my S5200 player to see if automatically works. Perhaps it is just this years models?

It only works on certain DVDs with my budget SONY model (last year), it's worth a spin at any rate.

I have a Panasonic 2013 Bluray Recorder. Is that too early?
Moving subs if necessary does sound impressive but I'm not sure picture quality would ever be called that with a non anamorphic dvd.
As they say , you can't polish a turd.
But you can zoom using the tv zoom modes if necessary although I did once encounter a Toshiba set belonging to my friend and his would not allow him to change the ratio on anything input from HDMI. Quite inconvenient.

There is likely a setting in the player menus that will ask you how you want to display 4:3 material.
Initially I put 4:3 which is how I wanted it, but this resulted in it being stretched. By changing it to 16:9 this told the player to add the sidebars in order to leave the 4:3 image undistorted.

My first Samsung player allows me to change zoom settings during playback, all my other ones - it's a prohibited operation. The TV settings will cut out the subtitles if you're using them, as you probably know.

It's worth trying your player with a few DVDs.

I don't think the set-up menu settings for 4:3 material matters, you do it during playback with some models and it's automatic with the Sony players. It's worth trying a few discs, my budget Sony only seems to recognise 2 of the DVDs I've tried so far, The Abyss remains window boxed although other members have it converted on their players.

I'm not saying I think this will actually happen, but it would be awesome if the upcoming re-packaged saga box and individual steelbooks surprised everyone by including theatrical versions...

Anyway I've always thought they would at some point, and still do, it's just a matter or time. I don't have as much of a problem with most of the changes that have happened in the films, but I still agree that restored pre-special edition versions should be out there, for a variety of reasons.

Personally I don't think they can ever make everyone happy, but they could certainly make a lot of people happy.

Does anyone know if the new repackaged box set contains the blu-rays inside regular Amaray cases or digipack type packaging?

Is it the complete saga if there is another film made and two more scheduled?

It's as "complete" as the Saga gets until December 18th 2015, just as the Bond 50 set was only intended to celebrate those 50 years. New sets will say something different, it's not rocket science.
