Blu-ray Samurai

The first movie was never really bad to begin with so why a 4k remaster? Is it just a money grab? I have the double pack. Is it worth upgrading? I think I paid $15 for the two movie set. I can live without the DVD's. I know 4k is the rage now but my tv is a 1080p and my Blu Ray is a standard BD player. I like remasters when they fix problems. As I understand it to do a 4k from scratch from original film takes a lot of time but because of the resolution they can fix a lot more than if only doing a 2k print. But if the 2k was already good, then rebuying is for what, a teeny tiny better print and maybe a new extra? Right now I'm 50/50 on rebuying the first movie and 75/25 against buying the second since it won't be a remaster.
If they have 4k streams, does it still pay to buy physical discs, especially ones in 1080p? If you have a UV version in 2k but a 4k stream version comes out do you automatically get upgraded to the new version? |

The first film is a 4K remaster for sure. It does pay to do a 4K scan. The first film transfer is not that great.. Looks like it came from a DVD era master and has a super soft look. Not a whole lot of fine detail either. Hopefully, this 4K remaster changes some of that. If Fox did the scan from the negative, then it should look quite a bit better than it does now!

I'd say that the current disc is so transfer-limited that its hard to say anything concrete about what a cutting edge re-do would look like (aside from the inherent limitations of the visual subject matter).

Even it is a YouTube compression video, this new 4K master looks nice.

It is definitely awkward packaging. Back when I had a much smaller collection I used to be more accepting towards these kind of collectibles. But now almost a decade into blu ray's life these are just getting tougher to organize. Digibooks and steelbooks are about as far as I'll go now since they seat comfortably with the other releases. So as cool as the battle plan map and similar widgets from other sets are, I'm willing to forgo them for the benefit of shelf uniformity of standard releases.

I'd rather look at a picture of Buzz's girlfriend than to look at the ugly paint can.
