Seems I’m on a Japanese venue thing today. So, to continue with that theme , although much of the information as to the HDR mandatory and optional (Dolby and Phillips) parameters for Ultra HD Blu-ray detailed in the following Japanese reporting have already been described at least in piecemeal fashion over past months by either Richard or myself, but as a follow-up/affirmation to thee old, rather esoteric, SeeQVault discussion –

See one of the later pages here, from yesterday - http://www.phileweb.com/news/d-av/201508/18/37210.html ....if my Google translator worked right over lunchtime.

Any word if the format will be available this year for average joe's?

Am tired of watching 4K Macrovision.

Tomorrow could be the big day, do any of the insiders know if we can expect anything or is it still more than likely to be IFA before anything concrete appears?

No title talk from me. Last time I did that was back in '06 with leaking Happy Madison’s Click (on another forum) as the scheduled-to-be first BD50 title…and a couple people got irritated as I stole a tiny bit of their marketing announcement thunder. All I can tell you is that, with regards to tools for dem titles, the beta version of Indigo Ultra™ has been available for content creators since July…… http://www.prweb.com/releases/2015/07/prweb12851998.htm

And although not mentioned in the ^ press release, Version 1.0 is scheduled for release next month.

Good little video, glad to see that the misconception that HDR needs a massive bandwidth overhead is addressed once again.

And also

And, for the creatives, because even though the cameras can do it, the filmmakers can still learn a thing or two…..image dynamic range to be included on the curriculum, in one fashion or another, at future Master Classes - http://www.theasc.com/site/asc-master-class/ but, until then,

a freebie next week.

Why 4k Blurays when 5k monitors are already available?

Because 5K isn't a mastering standard, and the human eye can't distinguish the difference unless you put your nose to the screen.

5K monitors exist so 4K movies can be edited in 4K. Basically, so something like Gone Girl can be edited in full 4K without being in fullscreen. That's sorta dumb in my opinion, but apparently it's Mac's excuse. That and DSLR photos.

Gone Girl had a 6K post pipeline for a 5K finish so I can see why they'd want >4K monitors. http://postperspective.com/gone-girl...chers-path-6k/

what?

the reason Apple and Dell made 5K monitors was so that content creators could work with 4K content without down-scaling it or filling the screen.

On a 5K monitor you can work with 4K video at full resolution, and still have a significant amount of space outside the video for toolbars.

I didn't think of that. Thanks for the explanation!

The last feature on this list will be news to most, since Digital Bridge has been under wraps until today’s announcement.

What gave you the impression I was surprised by it? I was NDA'd on this feature for months before the announcement. Not being able to talk about it != not knowing

That's the kind of thing that makes me nervous about the industry and some of these new technologies. What is the point of an NDA on a feature that is meant to get people interested. Why all the cloak and dagger. What else are they not telling us.

Communication it is one of the things that separates us from other species, Why don't we use it.

That's why I qualified the statement with the word "seems"

Meanwhile, back at the HDR, SMPTE continues its work on the tricky stuff:

You and your fancy NDA's. Still, at least you're not a cocktease like some people are, you keep schtum and that's the end of it until the info is properly released.

Since last we talked, I just hope you’ve been working on your pronunciation….http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/temporal

So as to refine your presentations during interviews or at conferences, e.g.….

P.S.
To SMPTE fellows reading, I don’t care about what Mark says, for he’s long marched (in his sandals) to the beat of a different drummer. David is not so incorrigible.
