I doubt it. The same Sony who let the rights revert back to Toho on Godzilla vs the Sea Monster, Son of Godzilla, Godzilla vs the Smog Monster, Godzilla vs Gigan, and Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla? I think their interest peaked in the early-mid 2000's.

[Show spoiler] True, they did, but they also renewed their rights for the Heisei and Millennium films. Evidently sales are better for the more recent movies, so it's not impossible they'd be interested in the latest one. |

But they also released the Heisei and Millennium series on Blu-Ray last year, if they hadn't done that I would have agreed with you.

The contracts for those films had longer dates before they expired. Had it not been for the 2014 film we wouldn't have seen those on bluray last year. If Sony was truly interested they would have renewed the rights to the Showa films they had.

This could settled far more effectively if we had some insider access to either either Toho or Sony. At this point we can argue all day and it would all be speculation because neither of us have any true knowledge on the subject. It's fun to argue though.... Besides it appears that they first started releasing the millennium series on video in 1998, and only started with the Showa in 2004. Seems to me that they saw little to no profit on those, but had more success with the newer movies. Or perhaps Toho simply chose not to renew the contract with Sony for them Either way Sony seems rather insistent on keeping the 91-2005 films which they have had for 17 years now. |

Sony doesn't have any exclusivity to any future Godzilla movies. We could easily say the same about another Toho franchise that Paramount owns the rights to four out of the six entries, the Japanese Ring films. They passed on Sadako 3D while Well Go USA picked up the fifth film. Currently, nothing has been updated as far as a release on Sadako 3D Part 2. |

As for the quality control on the Blu-Rays they released, I have no comment. The only complaint I have is that the Japanese version of Godzilla 2000 looked horrible, like it was simply a DVD upscale. I am just thrilled I have the option of watching them in Japanese. As for other Toho franchises not having a regular home, foreign language films don't do well in the states, especially ones that are perceived to be silly like the showa series. It really would take a smaller distributor to even see a profit from those. Think about it, how many major US labels release foreign language films? Godzilla on the other hand is a proven brand, and obviously the 91-2005 series proved to be good enough sellers, because Sony released 2 waves of Blu-Rays. But as I said, all we have is speculation and till it actually gets a US press release we won't have any solid evidence to back up either argument. Personally, my favorite studio is Toei... I would love to get my hands on their library. |

RIP Michael Turner
But back on topic, I am very curious how this story is going to come along, especially since the events of the MUTO, I'm curious how this next story is going to develop. Not going to assume anything as I've no knowledge of what the story could be about... |

They seem to be indicating they are going for a villainous Godzilla with this movie. The 2014 movies marketing definitely suggested Godzilla as a threat to humanity but that's not what we got in the movie where Godzilla seems only to be a threat to rival monsters and is cheered by the public at the end. Likely this will distinguish itself from the American series with a portrayal of Godzilla more like the original as a terror on mankind

I'd say most likely Warner will release it. Mostly because they distribute Legendary's Godzilla series and thus they have more attachment to Godzilla than any other American studio. They will probably even put promotion for their Godzilla 2 in the extras for the Toho movie. I highly doubt Toho would object in anyway. Remember that Toho gets licensing fees and Japanese distribution and Merchandising rights for Legendary movies for a movie that they invest nothing into the production for. Its free money

On the other hand, Legendary could have all North American rights to the character and they might distribute through Universal. |
