At this point most of the technical aspects of Ultra HD Blu-ray have been revealed so my guess is that they don't want to talk about DRM until the last possible minute.

Personally I think it will just be HDCP 2.2 and improved versions of BD Rom Mark and BD +. The big one that caused all the contention AACS I think will see an upgrade but not to the extent that caused many to balk at the mere idea of what AACS 2 could do.

The CEA's HDR standard for Displays:
http://www.ce.org/News/News-Releases...-Displays.aspx "A TV, monitor or projector may be referred to as a HDR Compatible Display if it meets the following minimum attributes: • Includes at least one interface that supports HDR signaling as defined in CEA-861-F, as extended by CEA-861.3. • Receives and processes static HDR metadata compliant with CEA-861.3 for uncompressed video. • Receives and processes HDR10 Media Profile* from IP, HDMI or other video delivery sources. Additionally, other media profiles may be supported. • Applies an appropriate Electro-Optical Transfer Function (EOTF), before rendering the image. “CEA’s leading role in defining HDR compatible displays complements the work of other organizations such as the UHD Alliance that are reportedly developing HDR-related performance parameters and guidance for the video content, distribution and hardware ecosystem,” Markwalter explained." * Note: HDR10 Media Profile is defined as: • EOTF: SMPTE ST 2084 • Color Sub-sampling: 4:2:0 (for compressed video sources) • Bit Depth: 10 bit • Color Primaries: ITU-R BT.2020 • Metadata: SMPTE ST 2086, MaxFALL, MaxCLL |

Still waiting for the UHD Alliance. Will we have to wait for CES 2016 to hear from them?

You aren't going to see a UHD Alliance logo on any equipment at IFA which is only a week away.
How much of the UHD Alliance work has been completed? "WORK SCOPE •Specify requirements for the Premium quality of UHD Content, Distribution, Devices, and other elements of the ecosystem •Define criteria that distinguish premium quality ecosystem components while preserving creative intent •Provide clear definitions, industry guidelines and best practices on emerging technologies, and collaborate with other standards organizations •Develop testing methodologies and certification programs based on the UHD Alliance specifications •Establish UHD Alliance Logo program on certified products •Ensure UHDA‐branded content is guaranteed optimal presentation on UHDA‐branded devices •Promote UHD Alliance Brand and ecosystem to consumers •Establish consumer facing naming and marketing messaging •Encourage consumers to choose UHDA‐branded products for a truly next‐generation experience" (UHD Alliance) |

I still think we'll be lucky to see a full retail blitz this year, maybe a 'soft' launch with a single slow-assed player and a handful of titles, but there's no way it's coming out in Europe in 2015 in any case. CES will surely be the big launchpad event, especially because the manufacturers will have their 2016 TV line ups to show off in tandem with UHD BD. Maybe spring for the 'hard' launch in the US, summer 2016 for Europe.

I don't think it is required for them to play DVD's. I think most of them probably will but again I don't think it is required in the spec for a UHD-Blu-ray Player. Best advice I can give you is to pay close attention to the specs as individual players come out.
Nothing like releasing a product with even more confusion to add to Joe public's list of buyer beware. T |

Unless you buy the wrong one that cuts corners to undercut price or increase margins by not including the Red Laser for the DVD and CD playback. It is one more thing the consumer has to be aware of when selecting a UHD player as there is no set rule mandating the inclusion of the Red laser.

I wouldn't bet on that. have you not seen the threads around here about how DVD makes eyes bleed and kills babies. I have no doubt that some users would actually view a lack of a red laser as a good first step and thank god no more DVD's. The added benefit would be higher margins for the manufacturer. Hell they would likely even market the darn thing as a premium product with special caps from japan and blah blah blah so they could sell it at a premium price.
