As you probably know a new Ultra HD Blu-Ray format is launching in early 2016. The format supports 4 times the pixel resolution of Blu-Ray as well as high dynamic range and expanded color bit depth. Unfortunately for 3D fans the format will launch without 3D support. Whether it will be updated to support 3D video in the future is unclear but such an upgrade is likely years away. So we well could end in a situation where we will have to choose between seeing new releases in 3D 1080p or 2D 2160p with high dynamic range and 10 bit color. What will you choose?

For me it would depend on the movie. If a movie had a 2k source or DI than the choice would be very easy. While the new format can still look better than current Blu-Rays even for 2k sourced titles I can't imagine it being worth dumping 3D for unless the 3D is a terrible conversion on the level of Clash of the Titans or The Last Airbender. Since the vast majority of 3D movies of recent years have had 2k DIs I can say with confidence that the Blu-Ray 3D version will be the best version available for years. However if it is a true 4k presentation with high dynamic range and expanded color versus a standard 1080p 3D that might be a tough choice. I guess it would depend on just how good the 3D was |

I'm partial to good-looking 3D.
Even if I had 4K equipment, I'd have zero interest in Fox's upcoming UHDs of Life of Pi, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Exodus: Gods and Kings, assuming they are 2D only. It's kind of the same thing with Warner's re-issue of Gravity in Dobly Atmos. |

I'm sticking with 3D blu. I was very much interested in 4K but when I read that 3D blu will not be supported in their new players....turned me off to 4K. I'm still not completely sold on 4K.....but I was willing to upgrade....as long 3D blu would be supported
![]() Have to much $$ invested in 3D blu and 2D blu to start over with another format. Never say never....but for now...it's not happening. |

Well my completely impartial opinion is of course to stick with 3D bluray
Also, I don't like watching movies on a tv. I only watch them on my 120" projection screen. Call me spoiled, but tv's don't do it for me anymore. So the only way I'm moving to purchase a 4K device is when the projectors start to drop in price even more |

Plus if Ultra HD Blu-Ray takes off I'm sure 3D Ultra HD Blu-Ray will be added to the spec down the road as the next big thing. By then more 3D movies with actual 4k DIs might finally be out |

Does anyone else think UHD Blu-ray is one step forward, one step back? This shit is ridiculous. There is no good technical reason for why the format couldn't have supported frame packed 4K 3D video @ 30 Hz, since it supports 4K 2D video @ 60 Hz.
Already, I'm finding myself having to decide between whether I want to watch a movie at a higher resolution in 2D or watch it in 3D, when my Samsung JS9500 Series 4K TV could support 3D video at 4K resolution, if only the crappy UHD Blu-ray format supported it. I think it's reprehensible that they left 3D support out of UHD BD's technical specifications because now they are going to force us to choose between the 3D Blu-ray or the UHD Blu-ray for every future 3D movie. M-Go has several titles in 4K that have a 3D Blu-ray release like Life of Pi and X-Men so it's already happening even though UHD Blu-ray isn't out yet: https://www.mgo.com/list/uhd-with-download-beta Sony's Video Unlimited 4K service also has several movies that have a 3D Blu-ray release, but their 4K release is only available in 2D, like Men in Black 3, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, etc. This situation of having to pick between watching a movie in 4K or in 3D instead of being able to have both at the same time is completely unacceptable. |

This is a lie, as evidenced by the presence of 3D movies in 4K resolution but only in 2D such as Men in Black 3 on Sony's Video Unlimited 4K service.
And there's no reason why future titles couldn't be finished in 3D and 4K at the same time. |

Yeah, it's a bummer. I'll most likely watch any 3D movie in standard 3D Bluray, and any 4K movie in 4K. From the 4K stuff I've seen so far, I notice a much bigger difference with well done 3D vs the resolution increase. If you consider that at any given time (on a passive 3D TV like mine at least), there are 1920x2160 pixels on screen with a 3D bluray, vs 3840x2160 with a full 4K source, in a way you're really only losing half the resolution instead of 1/4 with standard 2D 1080P.

That's a converted film, though. It's probably the case that the movie was mastered in 4K in 2D and then the conversion itself was done in 2K. That's how it was done for Titanic and Jurassic Park's conversions, for example.

![]() Before calling anyone a liar, please, do post ONE movie shown theatrically in 4K and 3D. ![]() Just because a 3D released movie is available in 16K, doesn't mean that the DCP was done in 3D at that resolution. |

I can accept having 3D conversion (or native) done in 2K only, but I will hate being forced to choose between a 3D and 4K SKU Blu-ray, if there is no combo available that includes both. Virtually all 3D BD movies today automatically come with a 2D version, so yes it will suck having to choose, should it come down to that. Most of the top titles have a 3D version, so hopefully they can bundle them together.

Why do people who dislike 3d want it to go away, so that those of us that like it can't enjoy it? Seems A: selfish and B: retarded in inhibiting technology growth.
