I come down firmly on the pro-digipak side of the debate. I think many of them are just beautiful. The one for Gone Girl for instance, or the one for Breathless -- both are just gorgeous IMO.

I first saw Hiroshima Mon Amour on DVD years ago, and the film, which is about how our past experiences mold us into the people we are now, made its mark on me. I loved its offbeat melancholic air that uses the city of Hiroshima as a backdrop for characters who expect to forget each other, but will likely never forget each other.

The Blu-ray transfer looks beautiful, and I am glad that I now have a better television with which to enjoy it. The flashback sequences in Nevers are my favorite moments from a visual appreciation level. The brilliant use of music comes across well on the audio front.

Hiroshima Mon Amour is a pretty straightforward film, and it is not nearly as labyrinthian as the 1961 Resnais feature, Last Year at Marienbad. Upon closer inspection, though, it's a quietly multi-layered film.

Revisiting Hiroshima Mon Amour makes me want to watch Lost in Translation again as well.

Hiroshima Mon Amour is one of the most moving films I've ever seen.

Last Year At Marienbad just left me staring at the TV screen with this blank, expressionless look on my face.

I value both kinds of films, but if I could only watch one of them for the rest of my life, it would be a pretty easy decision.

Well I've had more plastic cases come damaged than digipaks... how am I doing anything wrong when I am not in charge of delivery..?

I also assume you've had many more deliveries of blu in plastic cases, so of course the number would be higher. Not that many blu come in paper to begin with, so even 1 or 2 is already more in terms of averages.

But c;mon, you know as well as I that paper doesn't hold up. Corners get worn, paper fades, water damage can ruin it, seams tear. It's not rocket science to understand that plastic is stronger and sturdier.

Ive only ever had one damaged didfipak and that was Night of the Hunter.

Also the plastic cases scratch, crack, distort as well.

Just sayin'

Besides, I still prefer digipaks, why do people have such an issue with this? They do look better.

I didn't say anything about what you prefer. Just saying that plastic is sturdier, and IF it does get damaged, its easy to replace. Can't do that with paper. But seriously, scratches??? :roll eyes:

You can like whatever you like, but come back after the paper cases get torn and smashed on accident, or get shelf wear or stains. Can't fix that like plastic. Same goes for album sleeves, and Laserdisc sleeves. Just wears down after a while.

The thing is no matter which packaging is sturdier, I still prefer digipaks, at least the way Criterion makes them, but I don't care that my collection isn't uniform.

I just handle them with care, it's not like they are going to last forever, the discs will at some point become unreadable anyway.

Exactly. I'm careful with my digipaks, so they don't end up damaged.

As to being unreadable, not sure how old you are, but by the time any of my discs are unreadable, they will be in the possession of whomever I left them to in my will.*


* -- Which, actually, considering how much I smoke and drink, I should probably get together at some point soon.

Haha I know, I was thinking that there might not even be a way to play them long before they are unreadable.

I think if you have a small collection and like to see your movies over and over like 10 to 20 times or lend them to people, it could be a problem.

But I can hardly keep up with my collection now, I've seen almost all, but not necessarily via blu-ray.

You know, I was thinking of to whom I would leave them, and the only real answer I came up with is my library. I've been donating whatever DVDs I've upgraded to them so far. Might as well dish them off so anyone can appreciate them once I'm gone.

Of course, depending on how long it takes me to kick off, people might be like, "Discs? Who watches movies on discs anymore?!" by that point! HA!

Love the look of Moonrise Kingdom digipack.

My Own Private Idaho coming out two weeks after it sould be another digipack, based on the info provided on the booklet, which should be too thick to fit in a plastic case.

I hope that Mulholland Drive is a digipack as well because it would sit really nice next to the Eraserhead digipack..

Barnes & Noble has two 50% off sales (July and November), and Criterion has two 50% off flash sales (February/March and September/October). If you're a Barnes & Noble member, you might want to purchase them there because you'll automatically get 10% off in stores, and you can use coupons on top of that if available. I became a B&N member just for the two Criterion Collection sales. If you've purchased enough Criterion films on their website, you can earn a $50 gift card, which would be useful.

I'd go with Barnes & Noble, but the flash sales are pretty fun, too.

At B&N, international shipping used to be $7.49 for the order and $0.99 per item. They changed it to $7.49 for the order and $5.49 per item. Keep that in mind when planning on purchasing during a sale. It's not really worth it anymore. You'd be better off just keeping an eye out on Amazon and eBay.
