It might surprise you that I spend way more money on physical media than the $8/month I pay Netflix, and almost anyone I know in real life (it's been remarkable how everyone I know has simply stopped buying movies). Like I said, I value quality, and Netflix isn't there yet. But it doesn't take much foresight to see that's not going to save the physical release from nichedom much longer - and I don't care to worry much about things way out of my control.
I guess you missed my reply about The Furious 7 commercial advertised the Blu-Ray in a big way. The announcer didn't even mention digital and it was music to my ears when the guy in the commercial said "own it on Blu-Ray"

I'm sorry that you'd rather roll over and let corporations kick you, but I believe in the justice system and what they did was illegal. It was false advertising.
I'm not sure how much a free app cost you in bandwidth but when you get a free app and 2 free books, it seems petty to complain. Has this app cost you any money over the years? Was it like Disney Rewards and you're obligated to buy a certain amount of titles at full retail price under a specified time frame? If so, I would change my opinion. But, if this app cost you nothing but bandwidth and you received 2 free books because of it, I would just be happy.

No, you stated that power was less reliable than an Internet connection whereas most people experience the opposite.

I didn't miss it, it just doesn't tell me anything about how people will actually spend their money. Discs are still a big revenue steam, but the fact is that it's shrinking and expected to continue shrinking.

The good news for the near future is that physical media plays a much bigger role in foreign markets. The American market is controlled by a small cartel of like-minded Hollywood studios and distributors. They don't have nearly as much control in foreign markets.

Physical media will hold on much longer in Europe and Asia. Diehard American media consumers will be able to import for years after Hollywood has abandoned physical media.

But I hate the godawful rating stickers all over European Blu-rays.
They are so ugly, and they are all over the place. The front, the spine, the back, even on the discs themselves.

that day will never come. Because without physical media like Blu-Ray studios will lose billions of dollars. Not only to the many people that are totally against digital because they see it as a scam and smoke also those that have not fast internet to. But also to countless of illegal streaming sites like the recent (popcorn) and illegal downloads it all will be out of control if people have no rights anymore. Studios alone earn billions on Physical Media around the world as you say. Its also a huge market in US generating billions of dollars there. Combined i think Physical Media generate maybe 20-25 Billion yearly around the world. Noway in hell studios are gonna abondon such a lucrative cash cow.

Illegal downloads already happen from multiple sources. There are HD rips, blu ray rips, DVD rips, all out there already of practically every thing that's been released (and in many cases, the illegal copies hit the internet well before any retail release, whether physical or digital). Switching over completely to digital won't change that or speed it up, it's already there and happening.

Physical media will always have a place but revenues are dropping while digital is gaining. At some point, they will cross, it's inevitable, but that doesn't mean physical media will cease to be, it will only cease to be more profitable.

Right.
There's always going to be books, so that probably means there's always going to be movies on disc. Revenue will drop, for sure. Sales of discs will be pretty low. But movies will still sell on disc and coexist along with Streaming, downloading and the like

I don't really see the revenue dropping though, it's still around $25+ for my Criterions (sometimes you can get lucky and find some on sale for $20). Maybe if the other studios put more of an effort in, instead of barebone releases, they could demand more as well.

The studios are doing it to themselves. The ones that put an effort in are making top dollar.

I don't know. This particular transition of entertainment consumption is sort of unprecedented. Before it was just changing from one form of physical media to the next. Now it's a transition from physical media to non physical media in the form of digital lockers. Studios are certainly pushing for this as including digital copies in just about every physical media release as well as now releasing digital versions weeks before the physical counterpart is definitely an indication of this. Physical media will exist in some form for years to come but I think the belief that most people prefer physical media might be overstated. Of all my friends and family and coworkers, none of them buy movies anymore in pretty much any form.

I just have to point out the irony of the poster questioning people using their time "productively" when buying media or collectibles, yet posting multiple, multiple posts arguing on an internet message board....

Actually, nobody can know what the future of tech will bring.
In the '50's, the tech industry claimed that by 1980 machines would be able to do anything a human could do. Haahaaa, fools. So how can we really know for sure what method of watching movies at home will win or lose?

If that's directed at me I just don't see the correlation.

idle speculation and something actually happening are rather different things, no?
(and many old jobs have been eliminated because of technology. A computer running Excel replaces a small army of accountants that you often see populating offices in old movies).

This isn't true. Most online retailers have fine print that allow them to not honor errors.

There are also different rules for an actual printed "ad" vs an item for sale on a companies website.

I like how you just base things off of your experience and state it as fact. Apparently your power goes out more than your internet so that means everyone had the same problem in your mind. Meanwhile, in reality, multiple people have posted that their internet goes down much more than their power does. You act as though everyone has a fast internet connection. That is far from the truth. You act as though physical media is dying even though we will soon have 3 physical formats on the market. You act as though people have a disease if they purchase physical movies yet act like downloading a million things is somehow more healthy. You also act as though browsing through a physical movie collection is somehow a strenuous activity yet loading up and app and browsing through an online collection isn't just as redundant.

I never heard of anyone in a residential or industrial/commercial area losing their power more than losing their internet. Internet always, ALWAYS has more stability problems than power

"Bait and Switch" doesn't mean what you think it means.
