On the bottom of my review at the top of the thread I posted the link to the original uncut version that Monroville posted an image of. It's currently just under $25 from CD Japan. Here's the link to the original version again:

I own both the original version and the new 3D/2D special edition. They both have their pluses but they are dramatically different from each other and if I were to recommend only one version I would of course recommend the original. The special Edition is certainly eye-candy with the hyper-color and the 3D but the missing scenes and the altered music and voices is hard to accept and quite pointless honestly. They could have given it the same quality remaster and 3D conversion while keeping the scenes and original music intact.

The original version looks outstanding - the print is clean and sharp and the colors are vivid and natural without looking hyper like the Special Edition, but as you said, there are no subtitles. I have a VHS tape with the English dub so having seen that at least I have an idea of what is going on, though the dialogue was likely changed somewhat from the original Japanese dialogue. But even without subtitles, it's still a gorgeous looking feature-length animated film.

If you're a huge fan of this style of animation, I'd recommend it, but it's up to you if the lack of subtitles is a deal-breaker.
