Warner Bros In the Heart of the Sea (2015) Blu-ray 3D [Region Free]

In the Heart of the Sea 3D Blu-ray

was already excited for this before, but my hype just shot to the stratosphere with this trailer and the revelation it will be released in 3D!!!! I'm a little confused though if the tag at the end means that it's 2D only Imax and 3d only on regular screens. Even so, I'm super happy it's getting released in 3d and I'm sure it's going to look amazing!

IMAX website says it will be in 3D (has for a while now, how I first discovered it would be in 3D). The tag was a bit weird as well, I think either could be a new logo design, or could mean they will split IMAX showings between 2D and 3D like Man of Steel and The Hobbit (both WB releases as well) did.

Actually just looked at IMAX website and now it doesn't mention 3D (I had to have looked within a week or two before and its changed since then)- so yeah, maybe it will be 3D in regular screens and 2D in IMAX.

My best guess is cause the 3D release was added late (after it was delayed from March to December), but still kinda weird- I like 3D best theatrically when it's in IMAX. Hopefully it is a split between 2D and 3D IMAX showings, which I would not have a problem with.

Edit: Also this poster (dated today) mentions IMAX 3D, so certainly weird (for now, I'm going on a 2D and 3D IMAX split showings)

Thanks, I'm seeing enough that I feel confident there will be an IMAX 3D release (either wholly focused on that, or split between 2D and 3D). I'm guessing some of the marketing confusion comes from the fact that it was going to be just 2D and IMAX and release in March 2015, and 3D conversion plans were added sometime after the delay to December (I see the IMAX website still has the old March poster on it for instance).

So glad to see this is getting a 3-D release, after speculation that the plan had been abandoned like F4.

And it looks really good.

Great to get a 3-D film that seems to be a credible period piece amongst all the comic book movies and blockbuster franchise movies.

The only reservation I'd have is that the conversion work looks challenging. My worst memories of Clash of the Titans were the swaying of the rigging and the wrecking of the boat and the shoddy mess they made separating all the overlapping elements in converting those scenes. But I like to think those days are behind us.

Great news about the 3D, that has piqued my interest in this now.

It's the time factor. They rushed the Clash of the Titans conversion at the last minute, and killed 3D for a lot of people. I think Ron Howard will have spoken to the likes of Cameron, Del Toro and Spielberg, directors who personally and painstakingly oversaw the best 3D conversions out there, and decided to take more time with In the Heart of the Sea. Its original release date was March 2015. That's an extra nine months to perfect the 3D. Add that to the original post-production time allotted for 3D and you're probably looking at a conversion period roughly equal to Pacific Rim's, Jurassic Park's, and Titanic's.

Another thing this film has in common with those: a brilliant director. It's Howard's first crack at 3D, and he'll want to impress. I'll be surprised if this isn't a spectacular 3D experience.

The trailers do look amazing.

I suppose I am getting too old. To me this looks like another tan-and-teal presentation full of quick cuts and loads of unbelievable CGI. I love the cast, and Howard has the ability to impress, but when even the white whale looks blue I know I am going to have issues.

Don't let me discourage the rest of you; I just miss the old days when a monochrome film was black-and-white and cinematographers knew how to hold a camera still even before the SteadyCam was invented.

They showed the trailer in 3D at the Imax today before Everest.

Looks really good. I haven't seen many movies about Moby Dick but are aware of some. Most I think were made for TV and have a bit more of a dramatic feel to them. This one is surely made for the big screen.

Found the official website...http://www.intheheartoftheseamovie.com/

I saw the new trailer on a 4:3 IMAX screen - did they open up the image even more than it's intended 1.85 - I only ask because it looked like more of the screen was used and less letterboxed.

Is this Ron Howard's first 3D movie? Let's hope he's pushed for strong 3D.

'Teal and orange' seems to be a popular complaint of modern movies. I expect that look to fall out of favour in years to come, but it's somewhat understandable that they'd end up with those colours given the subject matter. This isn't material that lends itself to a particularly colourful pallette. You'd expect to have tanned sailors and blue-green ocean, although I accept they could've gone with a more naturalistic look.

It shouldn't detract from the movie.

And while I often criticise modern camerawork myself for much the same reasons, they are at sea during a whale attack. Tripod work and dolly shots wouldn't make sense. Even with the quick cuts, I found the editing read very well, I had a clear sense of what was going on.

Did you ever see the laserdisc of Huston's MOBY DICK? Martin Scorcese was involved in restoring it to its original intended look...more desaturated in keeping with the original intent to make it look more like old drawings/paintings of the time period. Subsequent releases went back to the brightened colorful TV version. I preferred the restoration. I've heard that Twilight Time may be releasing MOBY DICK on BD. Be interesting to see which version that will be.

Yes, I used to own that LD. The desaturation technique employed looked fine, and in fact made it stand out from the Glorious Technicolor products of its day. And I really should not judge ITHOTS by a trailer alone, especially on a computer screen. If the 3-D proves effective for a change I will even champion the film; I just tend to react strongly against movies that appear to succumb to the cliché styles of the day. I had the same problem a few decades back when practically all shots became close-ups.

Saw a preview of this on TV last night. Looks interesting and I like the idea that the whale is out to destroy every boat it sees. Possibly after getting harpooned one too many times I can imagine.

Agreed. We'll get a sense of whether he cares about 3D or not depending, though the budget plays a role also, regarding how much was put aside for the 3D budget the time time required to film/convert the 3D.

I remember that. Too many close ups and the movie loses all sense of location and the actor's gestures beyond just the face. The movie also begins to feel suffocating at times when there are constant close ups with hardly any room for mid and distant shots. Medium range shots are my favorite, from the torso up so we can see most of the actor and still get a sense of their facial expression.

The 1980's and before that preferred medium range camera shots. Plus they look a heck of a lot more interesting in 3D than the view of someone's face filling the whole screen.

(bumpthread)

They're already playing previews of In the Heart of the Sea 3D on TV now; even saw it during the world series Baseball game.

Anyone catch the 3D trailer yet?

This is one of my most anticipated films to end the year. Really glad to hear about the 3D. Hope the eventual blu-ray in 2016 will also have a 3D version.

unless this isn't a hit, Warner's is pretty good at releasing it's 3D movies as such on bluray.
