The USA is slowly but quietly beginning to conquer the world. Or perhaps it's because these damn USA Keyboards just don't have the pound mark to help us idiots out. Seriously they need to have buttons for those types of things and not makes us go through hoops.

Their reasoning makes no sense. It's not benefiting the viewer at all like they're saying, they're basically taxing new releases and Spectre gets extra tax for those who want to see it when it's released.

And this money isn't going towards giving the staff better pay, or improving the cinema, or getting more limited released films in cinemas. It's just extra pocket change, every 300+ seater cinema that sells out is an extra £450 earned and because it's a film people want to watch, they'll obviously shell out for it. Essentially they're charging people more for films that people want to see, apparently it's to help on the loss from Piracy, but at the end of the day, the large majority people who are only going to see Spectre are the one who don't frequent the cinema the most, and thus more likely to pirate it because of the inflated prices. It deserves to blow up back in their faces...but it won't, it'll thrive and whatever viewership is lost will be blamed on piracy and their answer will be to inflate more prices.

It's always amusing when you hear stories of Cleopatra, which at one point in time was the only film FOX was making, there's the old joke that executives where paying for geishas in Japan and putting it on Cleopatra's expense account (and budget).

Most of the crew doesn't move with the film. They pick up local crews anywhere they go. You can easily see this by reviewing the credits of films that shoot in multiple locations. Only the senior members of the crew travel everywhere. Some countries require the use of local crews, but even when they don't, it's much cheaper to do so.

Cleopatra came very close to bankrupting Fox. While it turned out to be the highest grossing film of 1963, it lost money (although with Hollywood accounting, every film loses money). It cost the equivalent of $339 million in 2015 dollars. It cost 15x its original budget.

There's a case to be made that all films should not be priced the same. If a film costs more to make and/or is in higher demand, the price/elasticity curve theory says that a business should charge more for it. If you look at it solely from the business perspective, any film that sells out should be charging more until it's not selling out. But in practice, that means that you're essentially auctioning off the seats and that will really piss consumers off. The other problem with extra pricing for certain films is that the inconsistency means you probably don't know how much it's going to cost until you show up and that could also alienate customers and have them avoid the theater completely.

But I'm still surprised that they're doing this in the UK. In the U.S., the trend has been that theaters charge more for 3D and for the so-called special screens: AMC Prime, RPX, ETX, Lie-Max, etc. or for theaters that have screens with special seats with bar/food service at the seats and that keep out patrons under 21.

While some consumers also resent this, in the 1960s, roadshow theaters with reserved seats and generally only two showings per day charged much higher prices than the typical movie house, sometimes close to legitimate theatre prices.

A case could also be made for charging more for films in the opening week(s), then letting the price fall as demand wears off, but since most films don't play very long these days, that would be harder to pull off.

Didn't know that, thought only AMC had IMAX for some reason. If it's at a Regal theater, then it should apply. Might wanna call and confirm before you buy, if you're planning to.

I know that, but it costs a lot to move the people that do travel from location to location and I'd imagine the amount of people has been getting bigger and bigger with each film.

It would be a pretty flimsy case, the theatre presents the movie no differently from a film costing half as much, they're using the same equipment and you're sitting in the same room, in the same chair. Should a theatre charge $1 to see The Blair Witch Product and $30 to see SPECTRE? I can't see studios been thrilled by that idea.

Unless a theatre is offering something different they shouldn't add a premium [Bond] to the price, they're still providing the same service. The only case they could argue is that these bum-numbing blockbusters are eating into their multiple-screening times and they're losing business because they're losing a screening, but they should take that up with Hollywood not the charge the consumer.
