How about Hydra killed his Mom and Dad from Cap 2? Seems like a good enough reason.

The only issue I take with that is just because he blew up all his suits doesn't mean that he stopped being Iron Man. He just realized that with or without a suit, he is Iron Man. It just means that whatever issues he had, it was no longer necessary for him to continue to build suits in order to function.

By no means do I feel that Ultron was contradicting anything.

Full retirement? What? He blew up his suits as a symbolic gesture (his lab had been trashed anyway) which neatly circles around to the line at the end of the first movie: Stark IS Iron Man, i.e. without him the suit is nothing, so now that he's got his head right he can get right back to business.

Watched AoU again earlier, what a fantastic film. Loved it.

He was never fully retired, if anything IM3 flows perfectly into AoU. Tony will always be Iron Man, but the effects of being Iron Man have clearly caught up with him (as we see in IM3). So he creates the Ultron program as a way of keeping the peace so he doesn't have to suit up as much. And then shit hits the fan.

So... it's not great because the first movie has a more coherent storyline? Which that was also a really good if not great movie itself keep in mind.

I could accept that it doesn't have a more coherent story as the first Avengers but that's only one singular aspect in the entirety. There's much more to it then a coherent storyline. It's not an incoherent story by any means. I'd argue there's much more depth and heart in this and it might not be as coherent in it's storytelling but it might have a lot more depth and heart, adventure and fun... and so does the lacking as much coherence following up a good/great film dismiss and erase everything else...

I'm not saying everyone has to love it the same exact way but what i am saying is that it is definitively and unequivocally a great if not amazing movie experience deserving to be in the same league as others on it's level such as the films mentioned [Raiders, Guardians, Back to the Future, Star Wars, etc.. which are all above 8]
You would be correct. I feel that Age of Ultron does have a deeper, characterization and thematic elements that were missing in The Avengers. My only complaint is that all of those scenes were spliced and edited together that didn't really connect well with the overall movie. It was like watching random cut scenes to be used as a foundation point of where this character is going next or setting up for the future.

And Ultron was just...there. Like, there wasn't really any real threat to him. We knew the Avengers would defeat Ultron so the stakes didn't feel as high.

This. I mean, his last line is literally: "I Am Iron Man."

But aren't the good guys always gonna beat the bad guys in these sorts of movies? Why are we still watching them if we know what's gonna happen? The point with AoU isn't so much that Ultron wins or loses because the damage has been done: Banner splits, Thor has to go back to Asgard and Cap & Stark are now firmly set on collision course. Like any good second movie, this one puts some deep divisions between the characters to set up the concluding part of the trilogy. Or quadrilogy, in this case.

No one knows right now but it'll probably show up soon since they've carried all the other Marvel movies.

They're friendly and respect each other. But at the end of the day, they're teammates, not blood brothers (and in the grand timeline of things, they haven't even been teammates very long or on a consistent basis). Could very easily see them having, let's say, healthy disagreements down the road.

There's loads of needle between them two throughout the movie, all it'll take is a little push...

As for the movie not acknowledging the TV show(s): meh. Whedon mentions this in his commentary, he says even though he was involved in setting up that side of things it's hard enough juggling all the Avengers characters in one movie, let alone putting in references to that other bunch as well. Does the show deliberately lead in to the movies? Sure. Doesn't mean it always has to happen the other way around.

Some people moan because the movies now seem to rely on too much acquired knowledge, others moan because the movies don't reference the wider universe enough. You can't please all of the people all of the time, as the saying goes.

I literally just finished watching the movie and had to come here to see what everyone else thought about the audio. I'm glad I'm not imagining things, because audio wise this really is one of the most disappointing releases in recent memory. I usually keep my volume at around 50 for movies and I can't remember the last time I had to crank it up to 60 to get a decent sound presence. Even then, it just sounds a bit dull for some reason

Yep, it's definitely missing that little something extra even when it's been turned up because mastering it that low has restricted the dynamic range, but it's got its moments and I still enjoyed it overall.

I watched it in IMAX and can't remember noticing anything out of the ordinary, which is not something I can say about the blu-ray.

Wow the 1 disc Blu-ray being $17.99 surprised me I was expecting $19.99

Good chance of it being $17.99 in stores on release day? Specifically Best Buy for me.
