Fox only made just under $2 billion domestic but when you look worldwide, they did $5.5 billion - a new record. I am not going to sit here and say downloads are okay or anything like that but the fact is Hollywood is not honest about the numbers and the impact. Movies still make a fortune despite the crap Hollywood had been making. Besides, in this case, it is supply and demand. They have an HD version available, they just don't see the profit in selling it but they have no issue selling it to tv to show. Why not make it available for download for $10? You can't hold back product, advertise about all the new box office records your movies are making and then go poor us, people are stealing and it is taking food out of our mouths.

Personally, I hate the Twilight Time practices because first, it is hard to get them here in Canada and second, how often can you actually get them at their suggested price? It is amazing how they always seem to sell out quickly and then flood places like ebay for double or triple the price.
victimofthecity didn't specify if the movie he was downloading illegally was available to buy digitally or not, just that it wasn't on Blu-ray. There are a bunch of movies that are in HD in iTunes and on Vudu, but never got a Blu-ray release. And in this case, since he said it's a "1080p rip" it's safe to say that it is available legally somewhere in HD, or else how could he get an HD rip to download?

The difference between properly encoded 256kbps AAC and MP3 is entirely negligible anyway. AAC is much better at low bitrates but at ~256kbps, lossy is lossy.

That's why I don't buy Amazon music. Although I do have some MP3s in the Amazon cloud thanks to "Autorip" which they offer on some CDs and Vinyl records purchased.

MP4/AAC is the way to go. I'd never buy an MP3. Amazon is illogical with their digital music. iTunes is DRM free (just like Amazon), and also at a higher quality.

I won't buy lossy audio, period.
It's 2015. Storage is dirt cheap. There's no reason for it.

I was just comparing the two digital formats. I mentioned a couple of pages back that I get music on Vinyl and CD mostly. I also occasionally pick up an 8-Track tape.

If its a unprotected flac file, then yes. I can burn it and hold it in my hands. Better yet, I can store it on my HD, and use backup/cloud services to keep it secure and independent of that service. I think thats how Itunes works these days (you can download DRM-free AAC files), albeit they don't offer lossless options, so I've never bought anything on it.

Actually, yes you can. If you bought them on iTunes, Amazon, or anywhere else that sells DRM-free digital music then you'll always have them on YOUR computer. Which means even if Apple/Amazon/etc. pulls the plug on the server, you can still play them. It doesn't have to "call home" for an authorization, because they don't have DRM on them. Plus you can burn them onto a CD, and thus hold them in your hand. I can buy some music right now from iTunes, burn it on a CD, and own it forever.

The problem with DRM is it prevents you from actually owning something. Which is why you'll never own the movies and TV Shows you get on iTunes or VUDU, but DRM-free music is truly owned.

I like vinyl. I'd like vinyl a lot more if a 128GB microSD card didn't replace 500 pounds of it

But I prefer vinyl.
by tangible I mean you get a PHYSICAL item from the studio..a professional product that you can hold and touch. I consider digital files being sold pretty much the same as youtube rips burned to disc. you're just paying someone for them.

Buying a CD or record is not the same thing as buying an mp3 or whatever file type. Let's stop pretending it's the same thing regardless of what you do with it once you download it (ie burn it to a disc).

tv rip. I had Star Wars in HD years before the Blu-ray as it was on tv and someone ripped it, put it out there for the world to see. Plus don't forget it is good in the States where you have a ton of services, not all of us have those options. Hey, I still buy movies too but Hollywood is quick to tell how much they are hurting when the facts don't support it. It is just a matter of greed. The music industry was no different - anyone remember when used cd stores started opening and the music company wanted to shut them down or get paid part of the sales again because they said it was hurting the industry? According to Hollywood, no movie in history has ever made money.

Who says it is?
It's not the same thing, but it is the same music. If you don't care about packaging, or indeed do not want a physical item, like I do, it's perfect.

I buy some and they are not hard to get. They are just pricey because of the exchange rate. They also don't sell out quickly except for a few titles in the past. On average they stay around for almost a year, at least (except for the horror titles for some reason).

If the files are DRM-free, then there's no difference between a CD pressed in Mexico or one I burn myself from the files I own. Well, that's not entirely true, there can be a difference. More on that below...

You're right. All of the files I buy are way beyond the quality offered by CD audio. And thankfully, most of it hasn't undergone horrific dynamic compression in the name of "remastering" like just about every physical CD made since around 1997.

That's barbaric.

In my case at least it's exactly the same. I still buy cds but the first thing I do is rip them to flacs. Then the disc goes in a binder that goes in a plastic storage bin that goes in a closet.
