My copy of Monsoon Wedding arrived today with a box cut across the spine of the plastic case. The spine of the paper insert was so sun-faded I couldn't read the title, the booklet was chipped, and the disc had come off the hub and was scratched. It was also the only title I ordered that didn't come with a sticker on the cellophane, which heightened my suspicion that the shrink-wrap wasn't the original. I'm not especially happy with the idea that I'm going to have to pay return postage.

The other 12 discs I ordered were perfect. :-)

That happened with the copy of Thief I bought at the last B&N sale. No sticker, weird looking shrink wrap, the BD was fine but the DVD had very faint marks.

It's beyond baffling to me why the brood wasn't released in Canada. It's a Canadian film for Christ sakes. Why did I have to pay extra ($39.95 before taxes)for an import... Yes I know the actual reasons, licensing yada yada but seriously what the ****.... It's as inherently a Canadian film as you can get.

Actually if I get down to it there's even more crap that just baffles me. Pretty much all of cronenbergs stuff are imported. And scanners, videodrome, they were shot in my home town Toronto. Yet trying to get these films at an affordable price here is impossible. It's a god damn effing travesty I'm telling you.

A final and most aggravating kicker... It's not even possible to get his most earliest works, shivers and others without importing it from Europe. Think about this for a minute.... It's beyond comprehension...

If you're in Toronto, you're only a 75-90 min drive from a US Barnes and Noble. Come down next month and grab it for half price or less!

Has anyone seen Gray's Anatomy? It doesnt seem to get discussed very often on here.

Just finished it and I thought it was really great. I was truly surprised...figured it might be a tad boring but Gray is fascinating.

I knew of Spalding Gray before hand and have seen him in other films but never in a monologue style setting.

Anyone know what the chances are of Criterion getting Swimming To Cambodia or Monsters in Boxes? (Not sure if the title is exactly right). I know STC is directed by Demme who's already in the collection with Something Wild.

It might be worth it if I were buying hundreds of dollars worth of movies. Don't forget about duty taxes? I could try and sneak them across, but that doesn't seem to be worth the risk.

I have no idea.
I just know I didn't order one and got one, although it is kinda cool I guess.
(in the end it is a little too flimsy for my tastes)
If you spent more than $100, you automatically got one for free.

I received my Baggu and it turned out to be grey...was hoping for black though. It might have been a random selection.

Did anyone receive a black Baggu?

I "tried" doing this order during the 24-hr "50% off" sale, but didn't get it to work/wasn't Totally sure about spending this much. Got a $10 GC from them & figured I'd see "IF" my Sale prices were still in effect, since I could always CANCEL the order near the end if the prices jumped UP, right?

Well, they didn't (!!), so I placed the order last night & will also be getting the Free grey tote

I watched youtube clips and read reviews. What bits I saw - and reviews I read - have convinced me to spend my money elsewhere every time there is a sale. Yet I think about buying it anyway every July and November when I am in a B&N, and one time came as close as walking toward the register with it in my hand, until my sanity returned and I put it back. I guess I fail as a completest.

...that's fascinating to me.
I think what really got on my nerves were the never ending scenes in the stock exchange. They just kept happening and went on forever with seemingly no point. I get it, the guy was materialistic and shallow. It doesn't mean we need to spend 30 minutes of the movie here.

My only real issue with Criterion has been cracked or broken cases. No matter who I order from I always shake the envelope or box upon receipt and I don't hear that sound. I occasionally get ones without the blue sticker or with those little "teethmarks" in the booklets but those really don't bother me.
My order of Dressed to Kill will be arriving tomorrow. I hope I haven't jinxed myself with the above paragraph.

Sorry if already posted here but it looks like Cohen Media will be restoring and releasing Merchant-Ivory films in the US (excluding some big releases - A Room with a View, Remains of the Day, Jefferson in Paris, and Mr. and Mrs. Bridge):

I consider all 4 of the Antonioni-Vitti films to be masterpieces, with La Notte probably being my favourite of the lot.

I love Monica Vitti as a blonde so L'Avventura and L'Eclisse get bonus points for that.

I've only seen L'Avventura so far. Thought it was a masterpiece. I own the other three in the "series". Can't wait to watch the rest.

On that note, have many people seen Identification of a Woman? How does it compare to the others?

Thank you for the heads up. I'm disappointed that Criterion and James Ivory weren't able to patch up their differences, but very happy that we'll be seeing such classics as The Bostonians, The Europeans, Heat and Dust, and Maurice on blu-ray in the future. Here's hoping that the Cohen remaster and reissue of Howards End will do the film justice ... and that Cohen will assemble a nice group of supplements for each film.
